Full Job Description

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Underwriting Rules Lead to join our team onsite in Fullerton, California. This role is responsible for designing and documenting the underwriting decision logic that will support our internal underwriting platform and future AI-driven decisioning capabilities.

This is not a traditional portfolio management role. The primary focus of this position is to translate commercial underwriting expertise into structured rules, workflows, referral triggers, exception handling standards, and approval logic that can be implemented by product, engineering, and data teams.

Key Responsibilities

Design and document underwriting rules, referral logic, and approval workflows for commercial P&C insurance products
Define quote, refer, and decline decision paths based on submission data and risk characteristics
Establish eligibility guidelines, coverage restrictions, exception rules, and underwriting authority thresholds
Create structured business rules for surcharges, credits, exclusions, and special conditions
Partner with product, engineering, and data teams to translate underwriting guidelines into system logic
Review edge cases and define human override and escalation standards
Build and maintain underwriting documentation, SOPs, rule libraries, and governance controls
Help ensure underwriting processes align with internal standards and regulatory requirements

Qualifications

7+ years of commercial P&C underwriting experience
Strong experience evaluating complex risks and handling non-standard submissions
Experience developing underwriting guidelines, decision frameworks, or policy rules preferred
Experience working with underwriting platforms, rules engines, or workflow systems preferred
CPCU or similar professional designation preferred
Strong analytical, documentation, and decision-making skills
Comfortable working cross-functionally with product, engineering, analytics, and leadership teams

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in insurtech or underwriting automation initiatives
Experience building underwriting processes in a startup or high-growth environment
Ability to turn expert judgment into structured business logic and repeatable workflows
