Job Description
The Test Technician performs electrical testing and validation of switchgear assemblies in a manufacturing environment to ensure safety, quality, functionality, and compliance before products ship to customers. This role focuses on executing detailed electrical tests, interpreting schematics and wiring diagrams, documenting results, and collaborating closely with engineering and production teams to build high-quality switchgear systems.
Responsibilities

Perform electrical testing and validation of switchgear assemblies to verify safety, quality, and functional conformity prior to shipment.

Execute test procedures to confirm proper operation of AC and DC circuits, transformers, fusing, relays, and circuit breakers.

Read, interpret, and troubleshoot complex electrical schematics and wiring diagrams to diagnose issues and verify correct wiring and operation.

Operate and maintain test equipment, including volt meters, breaker test kits, Dielectric (Hi-Pot) testers, torque wrenches, and related tools.

Validate correct installation and operation of electrical control components such as transformers, fuses, ice cube relays, and other common control devices.

Use various hand tools and power tools relevant to the electrical trade, such as wire strippers, crimpers, and multimeters, to support testing and troubleshooting activities.

Document test results accurately, including any issues or non-conformances, and communicate findings to engineering and manufacturing teams.

Collaborate with Systems Engineering, Wiring, Bus, and Assembly teams to resolve issues and support the production of high-quality switchgear products.

Follow and promote safe electrical work practices within a factory-based manufacturing environment.

Learn, understand, and comply with all safety procedures and emergency practices in the facility.

Support continuous improvement efforts by providing feedback on test processes, product performance, and recurring issues.

Work both independently and as part of a team to manage testing tasks, prioritize workload, and meet production schedules.
Essential Skills-
Proficient understanding of AC/DC electrical theory.

Ability to read, understand, and troubleshoot complex electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.

Hands-on ability to test and validate AC/DC circuits, transformers, fusing, relays, and circuit breakers.

Proficiency in operating test equipment, including volt meters, breaker test kits, Dielectric (Hi-Pot) testers, torque wrenches, and similar tools.

Skilled in using hand tools and power tools relevant to the electrical trade, such as strippers, crimpers, and multimeters.

Basic understanding of Windows operating systems for navigating software and managing files related to testing and documentation.

Basic understanding of the operation of circuit breakers from various manufacturers.

Solid knowledge of electronics and electrical control components, including ice cube relays and other common control devices.

Strong analytical skills to identify root causes of test failures and non-conformances.

Effective verbal and written communication skills to document results and collaborate with cross-functional teams.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask while maintaining high quality standards.

High attention to detail and a strong commitment to quality workmanship.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively within a team environment.

2+ years of hands-on experience in testing switchgear controls or similar control system testing.

Ability to interact professionally with peers and management.
Additional Skills & Qualifications-
Familiarity with various switchgear types, including metal-clad, medium voltage, and low voltage systems.

Experience with PLC wiring and network communication setup in control systems.

Knowledge of UL standards related to switchgear and control panels, such as UL 891, UL 508A, or UL 1558.

Desire for continuous improvement and openness to learning new testing methods and technologies.

Efficient communication skills for coordinating with engineering, wiring, bus, and assembly teams.
Work Environment
This role is based 100% onsite in a factory manufacturing shop environment focused on testing, validating, and ensuring compliance of switchgear systems prior to delivery. Work takes place primarily on concrete floors in a production facility, with frequent movement between test stations, switchgear lineups, and equipment areas. The position requires working in both low and high positions for extended periods of time to access components and test points within switchgear assemblies. The role involves regularly lifting up to 40 pounds and manipulating heavy test equipment, cables, and tools. You will work closely with engineering, wiring, bus, and assembly teams in a collaborative, safety-focused environment that emphasizes quality, thorough documentation, and adherence to established test procedures.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Raleigh, NC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
