This posting is for the State of Hawaii, Department of Defense, Youth Challenge Academy.

This position is located on the Island of Oahu, Kalaeloa

Salary Range: Commensurate with Education & Experience

The State Recruiting Office will refer all inquiries regarding this exempt position to the Department of Defense, Youth Challenge Academy.

Duties Summary

This position serves as the Lead Instructor at the HINGYCA and will be responsible for the Leadership of the Academic Department. HINGYCA's Mission is to Empower 'AT PROMISE' Youth of Hawaii with a quasi-military regimen; exploring their strengths to navigate pathways through educational and career success.

Provide development and oversight in areas such as character development, crisis counseling, career planning, job placement, independent living, alcohol and drug abuse, anger management, etc. to 18-year-old AT PROMISE YOUTH enrolled in the HINGYCA.

Provide character development lessons in a group setting and incorporate those concepts in counseling individuals who exhibit problems in adjustment and growth in the areas of social, emotional, educational, vocational, and health planning.

Collect information necessary to determine which issues need to be addressed; maintain contact with cadets and assist in preparation for future success; confer with cadets about problems and questions they may have related to work activities, rules, regulations, or personal matters.

Coordinate and monitor progress of cadets and prepare accurate, timely reports, forms, and records. This is a highly responsible position and includes accountability for actions.

A flex work schedule that includes day, evening, weekend, nights, and holiday hours may also be worked.

The Hawaii National Guard Youth CHalleNGe Academy, at any allotted time, without notice, reserves the right to adjust, modify and or make changes to the duties and responsibilities of this position to ensure Mission success.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS OF THE WORK:

A. Must have experience supervising personnel.

B. Experience safeguarding, person(s), the community and/or businesses.

C. Have worked in a team/collaborative environment.

D. Have demonstrated ability to work in a stressful environment.

E. Graduation from High School or GED equivalent.

F. Must possess or be eligible for state certification by the Department of Education at the middle/secondary or high school level (6-12, 7-12, or 9-12).

G. Work experience or responsible administrative, professional, or analytical work experience that provided knowledge, skills, and abilities comparable to those acquired in four (4) years of successful study while completing a college or university curriculum leading to a baccalaureate degree may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

H. Must pass National Agency Check and Criminal Background Check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

A. National Guard, Reserve and Retired Military members.

B. Experience working with at-promise youth.

C. Knowledge of the function of the YCA program and objectives; military organization, policies, procedures, and regulations.

D. Must have the ability to instruct/communicate orally to a group of people.

E. Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with others; keep records and prepare reports; communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing; direct and supervise at-promise youth.

F. Bachelor's degree in education.

G. Current CPR/First Aid certification card.

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, ETC.

Possess a valid license to drive in the State of Hawaii, and an appropriate military driver’s license, if applicable.

Other Information

This position is exempt from the civil service and considered temporary in nature. Therefore, if you are appointed to the position, your employment will be considered to be "at will", which means that you may be discharged from your employment at the prerogative of your department head or designee at any time.
