Full Job Description

Employment Specialist/ Job Coach:

The Employment Specialist is primarily responsible for providing pre-vocational and vocational assistance, job development and placement with economic self-sufficiency as the objective of the counseling process. The highest priority of a vocational program is job readiness and job development activities which result in the employment and self-sufficiency of the individual. Halo Network will provide comprehensive employment and workforce development to facilitate individuals' employment. Halo Network service will start with Self Directed Search (SDS) or Explorworks to determine individual's preference and follow up with Discovery activities for individual served under the OPWDD auspices. The purpose of these career exploration methods is to help individuals choose a career that they will be most successful in. Topics covered in this program will include but are not limited to career exploration and planning, job readiness instruction, resume writing, interviewing skills, occupational skill development, vocational technical training, and job placement and retention services.

This is an ideal role for a motivated, self-starter who is able to work independently, and develop and foster relationships with our community partners.

Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED, successful completion of all required training within 90 days of employment, ability to lift up to 25 lbs., valid NYS Driver’s License.

Skills & Knowledge: Demonstrated ability to interact in a respectful, dignified manner with individuals, ability to verbally communicate effectively with individuals, staff, and outside agencies in order to maintain efficiency operation of agency business, demonstrated written skills to adequately perform all required documentation, ability to follow verbal and written directions of supervisors, program plans, behavior plans; A commitment to empowering others to solve their own problems, the ability to establish and set appropriate limits with persons serviced to help them gain skills and confidence. Experience with computers and knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Evaluate and match the strengths and interests of the individuals we support to an appropriate employment situation (individual placement, internship, work experience, etc.).
Develop employment goals and plans.
Evaluate and update goals as needed.
Ensure program and documentation guidelines are met for all programs (SEMP, ETP, Pathway to Employment, Acces-VR).
Complete the intake for individuals referred for vocational services. Participates in community activities with participants as assigned by supervisor.
Keep accurate records of all job development and placement activities by participants, including employer response, follow-up required, and amount of time spent on the activity.
Train individuals in core tasks. Develop, create and implement coaching strategies to expedite skill acquisition for those served, and maximize independence at all times.
Create a task analysis and utilize for training purposes.
Assist individuals on a one-to-one basis to achieve employment related goals, per employer’s specifications, showing progression at the job site and improvement through SEMP Habilitation plan.
Maintain relationships with existing employers and establish relationships with new employers who are willing to hire the individuals in our program.
Maintain good communication with participants and their families/advocates to facilitate successful employment outcomes.
Provide protective oversight for individuals at their job location.
Assist individuals with travel training supports if/when necessary and ability to transport self and individuals to multiple locations.
Performs other functions as directed by supervisor.
