Director of Nursing (DON)
DIRECTOR OF NURSING

JOB TITLE: DIRECTOR OF NURSING

DEFINITION: This is a Non-Union full-time skilled position. This position is classified as Exempt for the purpose of the Fair Labor Standards Act. The employee will be responsible to plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the nursing service in order to meet the total needs of the residents and to maintain a quality of service that will fulfill the objectives of the facility and be in accord with the policies set forth by the facility’s administration and governing body as well as in accord with, both Federal and State regulations.

EQUIPMENT: The employee will operate hoyer lifts, wheelchairs, glucometers, sphygmomanometer, weight scale, thermometers, computers, printers, and facility vehicles.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

Listed below is an outline of the major duties and responsibilities that you will be required to perform. As Director of Nursing you are delegated the authority, responsibility, and accountability to carry out your assigned duties. Even though your job description is broad, every effort has been made to make this outline as complete as possible. However, we must emphasize that you may be required to perform other related duties and activities. As the Director of Nursing you will report directly to the Administrator.

When necessary, administers disciplinary , up to and including discharge, in accordance with facility policy.
Maintains nursing service objectives, standards of nursing practice, nursing procedure manuals and written job descriptions for each level of nursing personnel.
Participates in planning and budgeting for nursing care.
Maintains the budgeted number and levels of nursing personnel to be employed.
Participates in the development and implementation of resident care policies. Plans and conducts orientation programs for new personnel.
Plans and conducts continued in-service training for all nurses and direct resident care personnel.
Is responsible to the administrator for the selection, assignment and direction of the activities of nursing personnel, including charge nurses.
Develops work schedules to provide optimum resident care using available personnel.
Ensures that medical care plans are in place as necessary for residents who require a medical care plan.
Reviews the 24 hour log daily and ensures charting reflects notations on such log.
Coordinates disciplines to promote optimum resident care.
Sees that drugs covered by Controlled Substances Act are verifiable by inventory and shift count documentation.
Responsible for all records involving the nursing department.
Conducts monthly meetings with nursing personnel.
Ensure that department personnel follow established policies and procedures at all times.
Ensure that resident’s rights are maintained at all times.
Will maintain nursing supply inventory with cost effective pricing.
Responsible for the maintenance of employee immunizations required by OSHA and Public Health regulations.
Supervise the Medical Records Clerk in scheduling resident follow up appointments; ensuring that residents are seen by outside clinicians as ordered.
Meet with department personnel, on a regularly scheduled basis, and elicit advice from inter-department supervisors concerning the operation of the department, assist in identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or the improvement of services.
Evaluate employee performance and make recommendations to the Administrator concerning wages and salary adjustments, hiring, terminations, transfers, etc.
Provide information to resident/families as to Medicare/Medicaid, or other financial assistance programs available to the resident, or refer to appropriate social service department or agency.
Perform administrative requirements such as completing necessary forms, reports, etc., and submitting to the Administrator as required.
Coordinate Nursing Service with other departments.
Inspect the Nursing Service areas and practices for compliance with current applicable regulations at least monthly.
Serve on various committees of the facility, as required, or as appointed by the Administrator, including Human Rights, Behavior Management, Infection Control, and Pharmacy, Quality Assurance, and serve on the Interdisciplinary Team.
Participate in Pre-Admission Screening meetings to ensure the Nursing Department can meet the needs of the perspective resident.
Set standards for department personnel.
Review complaints and grievances pertaining to the Nursing Department and make necessary oral/written reports to the Administrator.
Represent the facility in dealings with outside agencies, including governmental agencies and third party payees, or provide an authorized representative when unable to attend such meetings.
Attend and participate in workshops, seminars, etc., to keep abreast of current changes in the health care field, as well as to maintain a professional status.
Ensure that the department is maintained in a clean and safe manner for resident comfort and convenience by assuring that necessary equipment and supplies are maintained to perform such duties/services.
Make rounds with attending physicians/medical director, etc. as necessary.
Make daily rounds to ensure that department personnel are performing required duties, and to assure that appropriate resident care is being rendered.
Each week, measures wounds and documents progress.
Reviews incoming lab results and forwards appropriate labs to physicians.
Is familiar with and adheres to all applicable Golfview Developmental Center policies and procedures.
Other responsibilities as deemed necessary and appropriate or as may be directed by the Administrator.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works in well-lighted/ventilated office areas, as well throughout the Nursing Service areas.
Sitting, standing, bending, lifting up to 50 pounds, and moving intermittently during working hours.
Subject to frequent interruptions.
Involved with residents, family members, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions/circumstances.
Willingness to work beyond normal working hours, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary. Expectation to routinely conduct on site supervision of all shifts.
Available by telephone at all times unless other coverage is arranged.
May require travel to participate in continuing educational programs.
Subject to falls, infectious diseases, odors, etc., throughout the workday.
Must possess the physical dexterity to perform CPR.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

1. Graduation from accredited school of nursing; current Illinois Professional License as a Registered Nurse.

2. Supervisory experience in a long term care setting.

3. Experience with Developmentally Disabled population preferred.

4. Must have a valid Drivers License.

5. Must have or be able to attain CPR Instructor Certification.

6. Must have or be able to attain Rehabilitation Nurse Certification.

7. Must have legal authorization to work in the United States of America.

8. Must be able to report for work on time and to perform the duties of the job for the entire workday.

9. Must be able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and to effectively communicate with the public.

10. Must have a comprehensive knowledge of general nursing theory and practice, including the basic knowledge relating to nursing; such as biological, physical, social and medical sciences and their application for better understanding of patient-care problems.

11. Thorough knowledge of principles and methods involved in instruction of nursing and auxiliary personnel, in demonstrating techniques and methods of patient-care services, and assessing of patient’s needs.

12. Knowledge of the application of principles of personnel administration in assigning, supervising and evaluating activities of staff.

13. Must maintain CPR Instructor Certification as well as First Aid, and Mandt Certification.
