Full Job Description

Come gain extensive skills working for a small law office representing individuals with disabilities in Social Security disability matters. We are specifically looking for someone who has shown a dedication to fighting for civil rights. Candidate must be competent to work independently on multiple tasks and be flexible, reliable, and fearless. You will be managing most day to day tasks, while also directly assisting in the representation of individuals with life-altering disabilities (both physical and mental) who have been denied essential government benefits such as Social Security disability. This requires the ability and desire to be flexible, detail oriented, work well with a diverse client base, and be persuasive and tenacious.

The start date for this position is August 15 if possible. It is part-time from August 15, 2026 (you will be working and learning alongside the current paralegal) until August 21, 2021, at which point it will become full-time. (Specific dates are negotiable.)

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelor’s Degree and at least ONE year of administrative assistance experience, or clinical or internship experience providing client advocacy.

2. Ability to work during regular business hours (8 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Thursday) for at least thirty-two hours per week

3. Excellent verbal and written fluency in English.

4. Proficient with MS Office, Gmail and Google Calendar, and Dropbox or other similar cloud-based software (Preference to those with experience using Clio software)

5. Ability to effectively meet deadlines and prioritize tasks

6. Experience practicing sensitivity to the needs of diverse individuals facing challenges

7. Persuasive writing and oral skills

8. Fearlessness in the face of seemingly insurmountable bureaucratic lunacy

9. Excellent judgment and discretion

10. A strong desire to provide compassionate and excellent legal advocacy on behalf of individuals with disabilities.

Preference given to anyone with experience in Social Security or disability law matters or at least 2-3 years as a legal assistant for a small firm.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:

This position will include the following, as well as other daily and necessary tasks as they arise:

Consistently answering phones and taking messages in a professional manner Corresponding with government agencies, courts, clients, and opposing counsel
Timely drafting, filing and organizing legal documents
Scheduling clients and deadlines
Interviewing clients to obtain information (this means being someone who is a good listener)
Drafting, filing, and following up on discovery requests
Assisting with the editing of legal briefs
Following up on the payment of awards
Managing daily office tasks such as mail, ensuring adequate office supplies, organizing
If time allows, may be able to work on more substantive legal tasks such as brief writing
This job requires the ability to communicate clearly over the telephone, work well with other people even under stress, and maintain attention to detailed tasks for up to two hours at a time.

COMPENSATION DETAILS: $24 to $28 per hour, Depending on experience, with paid vacation, sick leave and federal holidays.
