Full Job Description

Our team of healthcare professionals is looking to add an energetic, bubbly, people person full of entertainment ideas to keep our residents engaged. If you have a personality and level of energy that gets people moving, this is the job for you! Applicants must be able to work around disabled, elderly, confused, and sometimes behavioral individuals with professionalism and courtesy. Activity Directors supervise their team of activity aides and also self-engage in the performance of activity calendar development and the carrying out of special activity functions. Self motivation and the ability to inspire others is essential. NEW College Grads with related degree considered.

JOB SUMMARY

The Activity Director is responsible for coordinating all activities in the facility for the residents. The Activity Director will ensure that activities offered appeal to the residents and opportunities for self expression and experiences are available. The Activity Director will complete assessments, care plans and other required documentation as determined by regulation within the electronic health record on a timely basis.

The Activity Director interacts regularly with our diverse population of geriatric long term residents. Applicants must be creative and able to plan and explore activities for the residents. The Activity Director hires, disciplines, supervises, coordinates and evaluates a department of 3-5 activity aides. Scheduling of this staff to meet the activity needs of the facility is required. Great energy, customer skills and an infectious positive attitude are essential.

This Activity Director is part of the leadership/management team and will be cross trained into other areas of management. This allows for career growth and opportunity. The Activity Director will be part of the Manager on Duty schedule and will be required to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays although the main work schedule is Monday-Friday on the day shift.

Education requirements for this job include a High School Diploma. A college degree in a related Activity Professional area is desired ( and will warrant a salary on the higher end of the scale). Candidates must be able to complete the 36-hour basic orientation program for Activity Professionals.

QUALIFICATIONS

Hold a high school education or equivalent.
Three years of experience in group and individual activity programming.
Must be able to read, write and speak English.
Have experience and qualified marketing skills to effectively express the Alden’s Activity Program to the community, other health professionals, outside professional organizations, senior services, government agencies, and any other provider or professional in the community.
Knowledgeable activity programming with the ability to effectively communicate these disease processes to managers, direct care staff, families, etc.
Preferred associates or a bachelor’s degree, or education in Recreational Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Education, Social Services or equivalent.
If the candidate does not have a CTRS, OTR/L, LSW or LCSW, then you must be able to complete the 36 Hour Basic Activity course (with requirements to be registered within 90 days of employment and completion by 180 days of employment).
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Must have the sincere desire to work with a variety of populations that require long-term or short-term care.
Possess a knowledge and ability to apply that knowledge to deal effectively with this population.
Possess the ability to guide and direct staff in therapeutic approaches effective with the dementia and behavioral population on an-ongoing basis, if applicable.
Possess the ability to make independent decisions in the best interest of residents, staff, and families.
Possess the qualities of empathy, compassion, understanding, enthusiasm, and humor in order to effectively interact with residents, families, and staff.
Willingness to be flexible regarding work hours in order to ensure quality of care.
Understand and be able to manage emotional needs of yourself, and your staff.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to push, pull or carry 50 pounds.
Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with the residents, family members, personnel, and support.
Must be in good health.
Must be able to relate and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people.
May be required to lift equipment, supplies, and occasionally move furniture.
Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including exposure to HIV, AIDS, and Hepatitis B virus.
