Crime & Violence Intervention Community Outreach Specialist

Operation New Hope is a nonprofit operating in Jacksonville, Orlando, St. Johns County, the Space Coast, and Tampa/St. Petersburg areas. Our pre-release and post-release programs provide job training and placement, and comprehensive support services to people returning from incarceration and others who have been affected by the justice system with the goal of facilitating successful transitions back into the community. We motivate our clients to become productive, responsible citizens, and our programs help prevent recidivism, reduce the repeated costs of incarceration, and improve public safety. Our dedicated team supports career opportunities, mental health, and overall stability of our clients to help them achieve self-sufficiency.

JAX+ONH+CVI

Community violence intervention (CVI) is an approach that uses evidence-informed strategies to reduce violence through tailored, community-centered initiatives. The City of Jacksonville (COJ) through a federal Department of Justice grant, Community-Based Violence Intervention and Prevention Initiative (CVIPI) will target individuals and families in underserved communities at risk of committing violent crimes. ONH will work in conjunction with COJ to provide workforce development training, job placement, mental health support and other wrap around services to targeted individuals and families.

Position Overview: The Community Outreach Specialist is responsible for implementing community-driven, collaborative approaches to improving safety in targeted communities, helping to develop innovative intervention and prevention strategies. Provides employment preparation support including work history assessments, resume development, mock interviewing, case management, job matching and ongoing employment coaching. Position will complete an Individualized Plan of Care with the client to identify immediate needs, short-term and long-term personal goals, and employment goals. Monitors and documents the client’s progress toward goals for one year after program enrollment.

Reports to: Crime & Violence Intervention Program Administrator

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Manages a caseload of 25+ clients.
Completes Individualized Plans of Care, which include needs assessment.
Completes Risk Assessment with clients.
Facilitates employability assessments, which may include preparing a skill set profile, resume support, and one-on-one training/coaching.
Sets up interviews with potential employers and ensures clients are ready for job interviews.
Facilitates mock interviews with clients.
Connects clients to resources.
May provide bus passes, and other client resources as designated to clients seeking employment.
Enters and maintains accurate and timely touchpoints and case notes in ETO.
Coordinates with the Employment and Career Development team to schedule and assist with the completion of clients’ educational assessments.
Works with the Employment Team to complete client resumes.
Maintains an accurate list of services to support our clients and communicates updates to program staff.
Communicates professionally and effectively with staff, clients, family members, community partners and employers as needed.
Works with the Program Administrator and Community Engagement Lead/Finance to coordinate on-site community events.
Maintains documentation quality and integrity to meet program requirements, including weekly and monthly metrics.
Assists participants with securing vital documents, including, but not limited to birth certificates, Florida IDs, social security cards, and driver’s license replacement.
Maintains communication with employers and clients for 180 days following commencement of employment.
Participates in multidisciplinary staffing meetings.
Greets all visitors and clients entering the building with a positive, helpful attitude.
Other duties as assigned.

Education / Experience / Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree preferred (Criminal Justice, Social Work, Sociology, or related fields) and/or 5 plus years of community outreach and engagement work in high crime neighborhoods.
At least 3 years’ community outreach and engagement experience working with underserved populations.
At least 1 year of experience working with clients with mental health and/or substance abuse disorders.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
High integrity and behaves ethically, conducting oneself with the utmost honesty and transparency.
Proficiency in using computers, running reports, and learning new software.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and electronic client records.
Must be able to work Monday through Friday, with a flexible schedule that includes some evenings or weekend hours.
Must have a valid driver’s license, clean driving record and reliable transportation.
Must be able to clear a Level I Background check through the Department of Corrections.
Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs.
