CAD Operator / Telecommunications Field Surveyor

Matrix Design Group – East Hanover, NJ

Job Description

Matrix Design Group is seeking a CAD Operator / Telecommunications Field Surveyor to support the design and documentation of fiber optic and telecommunications infrastructure. This position is a hybrid role combining CAD production, field surveying, and telecommunications design support.

The successful candidate will work with project managers and engineers to develop detailed construction and permit drawings using AutoCAD and Civil 3D. Field responsibilities will include visiting project sites to document existing conditions, collect measurements and field information, and identifying existing telecommunications infrastructure.

Candidates should have a working knowledge of AutoCAD, the ability to read construction drawings, and a basic understanding of construction and telecommunications practices. Experience with fiber optic networks, OSP/ISP telecommunications, or utility field work is preferred but not required for candidates with strong CAD and technical skills.

Qualifications

Associate's or Bachelor's degree in drafting, engineering, surveying, telecommunications, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
Proficient in AutoCAD; experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D preferred.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Adobe Acrobat/PDF.
Ability to read construction drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
Ability to create detailed drawings from field notes, red-lined sketches, photographs, satellite imagery, and existing as-built information.
Ability to learn and follow established company drafting and design standards.
Basic understanding of construction and telecommunications practices.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a project team.
Valid driver's license required.
Ability to travel locally to project sites as required.

Preferred Experience:

Telecommunications or fiber optic construction/design experience.
OSP and/or ISP telecommunications experience.
Experience performing field surveys or documenting existing infrastructure.
Experience with conduit, fiber optic cable, handholes, manholes, utility poles, and telecommunications pathways.
Experience preparing drawings for construction and permit approval.
Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provide CAD production and design support for telecommunications and fiber optic projects.
Develop construction, permit, and telecommunications drawings using AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
Perform field surveys to document existing site conditions and telecommunications infrastructure.
Survey and document existing conduit, duct banks, handholes, manholes, utility poles, building entrances, telecom rooms, and other telecommunications facilities as applicable.
Take field measurements, photographs, and notes and incorporate field information into CAD drawings.
Develop conduit, cable, pathway, and telecommunications layouts.
Interpret hand-drawn sketches, redlines, field notes, satellite imagery, and existing as-built documentation.
Follow approved company drafting, CAD, and design standards.
Coordinate with project managers and other team members to incorporate design changes and field conditions.
Prepare drawings and documentation for client review, construction, and permit approval.
Assist with updating and maintaining project documentation and as-built information.
Perform local travel to project sites as required.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

This position is a hybrid role consisting of work-from-home, field work, and in-office work at our East Hanover, NJ office.

Field work may require walking construction sites, accessing utility and telecommunications areas, taking measurements, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $50,000–$70,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications.
