Job Title: Tutor (Per Diem)
Reports to: Senior Manager, Member Success
Office Location: Renton, WA
Worksite Designation: Hybrid
Live in the Puget Sound Region of the State of Washington with a reasonable commute to Renton, WA or live in the State of WA with a reasonable commute to Pasco, WA and/or Spokane, WA. Approximately 75% of the work is in person in various partner locations, 15% is telework from home, and 10% at office locations. Must come into the office on an as-needed basis.
The SEIU Healthcare 1199NW Multi-Employer Training Fund (Training Fund) is a non-profit, labor/management partnership including eight major healthcare employers and the largest healthcare union in Washington State. The Training Fund was formed in 2008 and is a statewide program that addresses the workforce needs of participating employers and supports the career, knowledge, and skill aspirations of SEIU Healthcare 1199NW members. The Training Fund is the sponsor of the state-registered Health Care Apprenticeship Consortium (HCAC) and of the Virtual Healthcare Institute (VHI) serving a range of regional employers, unions, union members, and student candidates.
The SEIU Healthcare 1199NW Multi-Employer Training and Education Fund is looking for per diem tutors to support healthcare system employees pursuing degrees and certifications in high demand healthcare fields. We regularly need tutors in the following areas for Healthcare Education Pathway Support:
- English Language Learning (ELL)
- Academic English, Reading/Writing, Listening/Speaking, Healthcare Vocabulary Basic Skills (Academic, Career, Digital Literacy, etc.)
- Natural Sciences (Biology, Microbiology, Anatomy & Physiology (A&P), Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics)
- Specific Healthcare Pathway Elements (e.g. Nursing, Medical Assisting, Environmental Services)
- Mathematics (Statistics, Calculus, etc.)
- Test Preparation (TEAS, HESI, TOEFL, IELTS, Compass, and other standardized tests)
- Social Sciences (Psychology, Sociology, Economics, etc.)
- Other subjects as assigned
Core Responsibilities:
- Effectively teach assigned subject matter one-on-one or to a small group of adult learners
- Utilize Smrt English curriculum and content in all ELL tutoring sessions as appropriate for learner needs
- Work closely with the Educational Programs and Educational Support Services teams to address learners’ instructional needs
- Monitor the progress of learners and report out as required
- Workshop Facilitation (as applicable)
- Prepare and deliver engaging, interactive workshops for small-to-medium-sized groups including:
- ELL Readiness
- Healthcare language skills and resources
- Essential computer and software skills (applying digital and language literacy in healthcare pathways)
- Resume, Personal Statement, & Cover Letters
- Test Prep
- Interview Practice
- Stats, A&P, Chem, etc.
- Other topics as required
- Flexibility to adapt workshop content to meet the specific needs of learners in healthcare settings
Essential Job Functions:
Incumbent must have the skills, abilities and judgment to perform the following essential job duties and responsibilities, with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Must be able to perform all aforementioned job responsibilities.
- Must travel to assigned local health system location(s) in the region to tutor (especially: Renton, West Seattle, Burien, Tacoma, Everett, Pasco, Spokane)
- Demonstrated ability to integrate technology-based learning tools into tutoring approach including the ability to use digital systems and tools.
- Ability to meet with learners virtually and adapt tutoring style to meet the needs of the learner.
- Ability to tutor learners during off hours, such as evenings and weekends.
- Ability to understand and adhere to health system safety standards at all times.
- Applicable to ELL tutoring assignments only: Must be able to utilize and navigate the Smrt English curriculum, an English Language Learning platform hosting curriculum specifically designed for healthcare professional multilingual learners) and content in all ELL tutoring sessions as appropriate for learning needs. Platform training provided.
- Must have a minimum of 2 years teaching experience (high school and college students) and/or tutoring adults in the aforementioned academic subjects/disciplines.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience working with academically, culturally, and economically diverse learner populations including English Language Learners.
- Adaptable tutoring approach to align with healthcare pathway curriculum and goals.
- Working knowledge of adult education theory and best practices.
- Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and conflict resolution skills. Ability to work collaboratively with instructors, member success manager and team and directly with groups of learners.
- Flexibility to provide targeted academic support within specific healthcare contexts.
- Experience demonstrating strong digital literacy.

Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree and/or relevant teaching certification (preferred) or equivalent lived experience related to job skills and duties
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times
- Must be able to access and navigate the TF’s facilities, partner organizations, and classroom locations.
Work Environment - Hybrid:
This position provides services primarily in Washington State remotely and in person. Training Fund educational operations include limited program work in Oregon and Alaska. The position requires various “in-person” involvement with students/apprentices, employers, instructors, and community partners at multiple locations; other portions of this role will be split between telework work and the Training Fund office. This position will require travel on an as-needed basis and during some non-traditional hours (early mornings, later evenings, and occasional weekends) to meet with participants and attend meetings at locations such as hospitals, schools, public places (community buildings, event venues, etc.), and partner organization sites.
Compensation:
· Pay Range: $25.20 - $34.28
· Benefits: Accrues 1-hour Sick Leave per 40 hours work
