Director of Operations / President

Company Overview

We are a locally owned and operated group of Hardware stores serving communities across Central Indiana. Currently operating 10 stores, we have an aggressive and well-funded growth plan to expand to 20 locations within the next two years. This is a rare opportunity to help shape the operational backbone of a growing regional retail organization during a period of significant expansion.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Director of Operations / President to lead all store operations across our current 10-store footprint and guide the organization through its expansion to 20 stores and beyond. This individual will be the senior-most operating executive in the company, reporting directly to ownership, and will be accountable for driving profitable sales growth, maintaining disciplined cost control, and building the leadership bench and operational infrastructure needed to scale successfully.

Key Responsibilities

Own full P&L accountability across all stores, driving top-line sales growth while maintaining strong, disciplined cost control and margin management.
Set and execute the operational strategy needed to responsibly grow from 10 to 20 stores over the next two years, including site readiness, staffing plans, and systems scalability.
Recruit, develop, and lead store managers and field leadership; build a strong bench of talent capable of supporting a doubling of the store count.
Establish and monitor KPIs across sales, labor, inventory shrink, and store-level profitability; hold store leaders accountable to performance standards.
Standardize best practices, training programs, and operating procedures across stores to ensure consistency as the organization scales.
Partner with ownership on merchandising, marketing, pricing, and vendor strategy to support sales growth initiatives.
Oversee inventory management, labor scheduling, and expense control to protect and improve profitability at each location.
Ensure a consistently excellent customer experience and strong community presence across all store locations.
Lead new store openings, including hiring, training, and operational setup, in coordination with real estate and construction timelines.

Ideal Candidate Profile

7+ years of progressive multi-unit retail leadership experience, ideally within hardware, home improvement, or a related specialty retail category.
Proven track record of driving comparable sales growth and improving profitability across multiple locations.
Demonstrated success managing operating costs, labor models, and inventory to protect margins in a competitive retail environment.
Strong, hands-on leadership style with a track record of developing store managers and building high-performing teams.
Experience operating in a growth environment — new store openings, market expansion, or multi-unit scaling.
Comfortable operating with significant autonomy and ownership-level accountability in a smaller, closely held company.
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, both with store teams and with ownership.
Willingness to travel regularly across the Central Indiana market as the store footprint expands.
