Young Management & Consulting (YMC) is seeking an experienced Mechanical Coordinator to support construction, maintenance, outage, and capital improvement activities at utility power generation and industrial facilities. This position is responsible for coordinating and overseeing daily mechanical construction activities while ensuring work is executed safely, efficiently, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with applicable codes, specifications, and quality standards.
The Mechanical Coordinator serves as a key liaison between construction management, craft labor, subcontractors, engineering teams, vendors, and plant operations to ensure successful project execution. This individual will support mechanical installation activities including piping systems, structural steel, boilers, turbines, rotating equipment, valves, pumps, HVAC systems, balance of plant systems, and associated mechanical infrastructure.
The ideal candidate will possess strong field coordination experience, knowledge of industrial construction practices, and the ability to proactively identify and resolve construction, safety, and quality issues in a fast-paced power plant environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesSafety Leadership & Compliance
- Promote and maintain a safe, inclusive, and quality-focused work environment across all project activities.
- Support and enforce company safety programs, OSHA requirements, plant procedures, and client-specific safety standards.
- Perform a minimum of 8 STEP observations and 2 CRM observations monthly, including providing real-time coaching and feedback to craft personnel regarding safety performance and field observations.
- Participate in daily safety meetings, pre-job briefings, toolbox talks, JSAs, and hazard assessments.
- Identify unsafe conditions or behaviors and ensure corrective actions are implemented immediately.
- Support implementation of T&PS procedures and site-specific safety requirements.
- Maintain awareness of environmental compliance requirements and ensure work activities align with applicable environmental regulations and permit conditions.
Mechanical Construction Coordination
- Coordinate and oversee daily mechanical construction activities for power plant, utility, and industrial infrastructure projects.
- Ensure mechanical installations are completed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, work packages, quality requirements, and applicable codes and standards.
- Support construction activities associated with:
- Piping systems
- Pumps and valves
- Turbines and generators
- Boilers and HRSG systems
- Structural steel
- Rotating equipment
- HVAC systems
- Mechanical skids and assemblies
- Fire protection systems
- Balance of plant systems
- Assist with work sequencing, outage coordination, construction planning, and schedule development to ensure milestone achievement.
- Coordinate field execution activities with contractors, subcontractors, operations personnel, engineering teams, and other disciplines.
- Monitor workforce productivity, manpower levels, equipment utilization, and installation progress.
Quality Assurance & Inspections
- Perform inspections of mechanical construction installations for compliance with project drawings, specifications, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) are properly developed, implemented, and followed by contractors and subcontractors.
- Conduct a minimum of 4 monthly Construction Quality Surveillances (CQS) on active field work.
- Verify installation quality for mechanical systems, welding activities, hydrotesting, equipment alignment, torque requirements, and material traceability.
- Ensure all quality documentation, turnover packages, test reports, and inspection records are properly completed and maintained.
- Identify installation deficiencies or non-conforming work and assist in development and implementation of corrective action plans.
- Coordinate with QA/QC personnel, engineering, and vendors to resolve technical and quality-related issues.
Project Planning & Execution Support
- Assist in development and execution of project schedules, work plans, outage plans, and recovery plans.
- Monitor measurable quantities, installation progress, and project performance against schedule and budget targets.
- Maintain awareness of equipment deliveries, material transportation schedules, and procurement status to support construction activities.
- Support project management and site leadership with contract administration and contractor performance oversight.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, pre-construction meetings, contractor orientations, project coordination meetings, and status reviews.
- Provide field input for lessons learned, best practices, constructability reviews, and risk mitigation initiatives.
- Support project change management processes, scope tracking, and field change documentation.
Technical Coordination & Problem Solving
- Identify mechanical installation issues, interferences, constructability concerns, and field conflicts.
- Coordinate with engineering, vendors, contractors, and construction management to develop practical field solutions.
- Ensure corrective actions are implemented in accordance with approved plans and procedures.
- Support system turnover, commissioning, startup, and operational readiness activities.
- Review drawings, specifications, RFIs, submittals, work packages, and vendor documentation as needed.
- Maintain strong communication with operations and maintenance teams regarding plant impacts and system availability.
Leadership & Team Coordination
- Support and mentor field coordinators, craft personnel, inspectors, and contractors assigned to the project.
- Promote teamwork, accountability, professionalism, and effective communication across all project stakeholders.
- Assist Construction Management with coordination of multiple contractors and concurrent work activities.
- Provide daily progress updates, field reports, schedule feedback, and issue tracking to project leadership.
- Serve as a field resource for resolving construction and execution challenges.
Qualifications
- High school diploma required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 5–10 years of mechanical construction coordination experience in power generation, industrial, utility, refinery, or heavy industrial environments preferred.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical construction practices, procedures, and industrial installation standards.
- Working knowledge of:

- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, isometrics, specifications, and technical documentation.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interface effectively with contractors, designers, engineers, vendors, and client representatives.
- Self-starter with strong attention to detail and ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- General computer proficiency and ability to prepare reports, logs, schedules, and documentation electronically.
- Valid driver’s license required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience supporting utility power plants, combined cycle plants, substations, renewable energy facilities, or large industrial construction projects.
- Experience supporting outage and turnaround activities.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred.
- NCCER, welding inspection, or mechanical certifications are a plus.
- Experience with Primavera P6, Procore, Bluebeam, SAP, or other construction management software preferred.
Work Environment
- Field-based position requiring regular work in active industrial and power generation environments.
- Ability to walk long distances, climb stairs/ladders, work outdoors, and navigate uneven terrain.
- May require extended work hours, nights, weekends, and outage schedules based on project demands.
- Travel may be required depending on project assignment.
