Job Description

Job Title: Staff Attorney

Location: New York City, NY

FLSA Status: Full Time, Exempt

Classification: Professional

Department: Legal Services

Office: African Services Committee; 429 W. 127th Street – 3rd floor; New York, NY 10027

Reports to: Supervising Attorney

Summary: The staff attorney will join African Services Committee’s (ASC) Legal Department to provide legal services to the immigrant community in the New York City area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

Staff Attorney will manage a case docket and be responsible for working on complex immigration cases.
Conduct legal consultations with potential clients; review client screenings and analyze evidence/information to determine eligibility for relief and viability of cases for representation.
Work directly with clients to prepare and file applications or legal submissions for immigration relief and represent them at agency interviews or court hearings as needed.
Oversee grant PRUCOL program, and maintain the screening and intake database.
Identify and assess non-legal needs of clients and make referrals to ASC’s internal programs or other partner agencies when appropriate.
Participate in Know Your Rights and other community-facing events.
Maintain case files in the case management database.
Assist the supervising attorney to compile relevant data for monthly grant reporting.
Represent ASC at meetings with other non-profit organizations or government partners.
Provide client consultation and advise clients on landlord/tenant issues and provide representation if necessary.
Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications, education, and/or experience required:

Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school and admission to the New York State.
Bar admission required. Candidates with pending admission to the New York State bar may be considered.
One to three years of experience working in immigration law.
Candidates with experience representing clients with landlord/tenant matters will be strongly considered.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability and experience working with diverse individuals and low-income communities.
Fluency in French or Spanish as a second language is preferred, but not required.

Salary: 70-80K depending upon experience.

Benefits: Medical, dental, 403B, and 2 weeks paid vacation.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position. A hybrid work format is available after the probation period.
