Full Job Description

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. CAIR’s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

Job Title: Community Impact Advocate (Kansas City, Missouri) (Non-Legal)

Department: Programs

FLSA: Exempt

Status: Full-Time

Reports To: Community Advocacy Director

Location: Kansas City, Misouri/Remote

Time Zone: You must be willing to work east coast/hours and here are the hours (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Salary: The salary range for this role $70,000 to 75,000. A new hire can expect to be offered $75,000 as new hire in the role. The compensation for this role is set and not subject to negotiation.

Where we Operate: This position is open to candidates who are legally authorized to work in the United States and currently reside in Missouri.

CAIR only accepts applications from applicants residing in these states. Applicants who are not currently located in one of these states may still apply. However, they will be formally notified that if selected, they must relocate to a state in which CAIR operates and/or to a location aligned with the job announcement prior to the start of employment.

Position Summary

The Community Impact Advocate leads the Kansas City, Missouri community engagement, outreach, and advocacy efforts by building strategic partnerships, elevating community voices, and advancing initiatives that support CAIR’s mission. This position focuses on education, outreach, coalition-building, public awareness, and systems advocacy without providing legal advice, legal representation, or legal services. The Community Impact Advocate develops and implements advocacy strategies, leads community engagement activities, and collaborates with stakeholders to address community needs and promote equitable access to resources and opportunities. This position has direct ties to community advocacy and engagement work of the Community Advocacy Department.

Essential Duties:

Community Advocacy

Develop and implement community advocacy strategies aligned with CAIR’s goals and priorities.
Identify community needs, barriers, and opportunities through outreach, stakeholder engagement, and data collection.
Lead advocacy initiatives designed to increase awareness of issues affecting the populations served by the organization.
Monitor community trends and policy developments that may impact clients, programs, and services.
Promote community-driven solutions and encourage stakeholder participation in advocacy efforts.
Participate in community outreach activities to build relationships with community leaders, partner organizations, and stakeholders.
Promote community awareness of CAIR’s programs, services, and advocacy initiatives.

Community Organizing

Lead and support nonpartisan civic engagement initiatives, including voter registration, voter education, and voter mobilization efforts.
Build, maintain, and regularly update a database of community members, volunteers, supporters, and organizational partners.
Develop and implement community organizing campaigns that advance CAIR’s goals and priorities. organizing campaigns to protect the civil rights of individuals and communities impacted by anti-Muslim bias.
Recruit, engage, and support volunteers to strengthen community involvement and participation.
Assist with planning, coordination, promotion, and execution of CAIR’s and community events.
Represent CAIR at community events, coalition meetings, and public forums to increase visibility and foster partnerships.
Track outreach activities, participation metrics, and campaign outcomes, and prepare reports as needed.
Perform other community organizing duties as assigned.

Community Engagement and Outreach

Build and maintain strong relationships with community members, neighborhood leaders, service providers, government agencies, and partner organizations.
Organize and facilitate community meetings, focus groups, listening sessions, educational workshops, and public forums.
Plan, coordinate, and facilitate community meetings, workshops, educational sessions, and public engagement events.

Serve as CAIR’s primary representative at community events, coalitions, and collaborative initiatives.
Ensure that community perspectives are incorporated into CAIR’s planning and program development.
Travel is required around the region and to National Events in other states.
Perform other community engagement activities as assigned.

Partnership and Coalition Building

Establish and strengthen partnerships with nonprofits, schools, faith-based groups, businesses, and public agencies.
Represent CAIR in coalitions and collaborative networks focused on community improvement and social impact.
Identify opportunities for strategic partnerships, joint initiatives, and resource development.
Supporting fund development campaigns and relationships in the assigned territory.

Program and Project Management

Plan, coordinate, and oversee advocacy-related projects and community engagement activities.
Develop work plans, timelines, and performance measures for advocacy initiatives.
Track outcomes and prepare reports demonstrating the impact of advocacy and outreach efforts.
Manage project budgets and resources as assigned.

Communications and Public Awareness

Collaborate with communications staff to develop advocacy messaging, educational materials, newsletters, and public awareness campaigns.
Support public education efforts through presentations, community training, and stakeholder engagement activities.
Assist in developing content for social media, websites, and community communications.

Team Leadership

Collaborate with community outreach volunteers, interns, and advocacy program personnel as assigned.
Provide training, coaching, and support to staff and volunteers engaged in advocacy activities.
Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

(J.D. Preferred, Non-Legal Role)

Minimum of three to five years of experience in community engagement, advocacy, nonprofit leadership, public affairs, or related work.
Demonstrated experience building partnerships and engaging diverse stakeholders.
Strong project management and organizational skills.
Excellent written, verbal, and public speaking abilities.
Ability to analyze community needs and develop responsive strategies.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and virtual collaboration platforms.

Compensation Package:

Health Insurance is available through CAREFIRST.
