Department: Arts & Literacy - Youth Development

Reports to: Multi Site Supervisor of Elementary Programs/ Multi Site Supervisor of Middle School Programs

Work Hours: Full-time hours

Location + (in person):

· Brooklyn: Bushwick, Bedford Stuyvesant, and Cypress Hills

About Program:

The Arts & Literacy Youth Development Program is an innovative and comprehensive afterschool and summer program serving Brooklyn and Queens youth ages 5-14. We provide education, creative arts, youth leadership, and health programming. The program builds leadership and literacy through creative writing, visual arts, drama, photography, video, music, Yoga, sports, martial arts, creative movement/dance, and apprenticeships. We engage entire families through monthly family literacy workshops, parent organizing, and comprehensive services available through the agency's other programs.

Summary of Position: The Arts & Literacy Assistant Program Director – Content Specialist (APDCS) is an educator, manager, and administrator. The APDCS supports teaching artists to develop and implement excellent lesson plans, steps in for the Program Director when they are pulled away and oversee crucial elements of data entry. The APDCS is a strong teaching artist, educator, or sports coach. They can step in to sub for a class or model strong teaching and classroom managment for another teacher. They train admin staff and oversee the input of weekly attendance on DYCD Connect and manage the administrative staff on site.

The Assistant Program Director- Content Specialist is in frequent communication with the Program Director, Multi Site Directors, Education Director, as well as various day-school partners. The ideal candidate has experience in arts education and youth development and has demonstrated experience teaching art, physical education, or another content area to young people as well as strong administrative, communication, and interpersonal skills.

MANAGEMENT

o Manage in the absence of the Program Director.

o Ensure all program activities comply with DYCD and DOH requirements.

CONTENT SPECIALIST & DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING

o Maintain an observation schedule, observing teaching staff 1-2 days a week

o At sites with 90 students or less, the APDCS may also teach 2-3 days per week as they will have less teaching staff to observe

o Observe teaching staff at least 2 times each rotation

o Co-teach with teaching staff to model strong pedagogical practices

o Provide teaching staff with observation notes during 1:1 discussion

o With Program Director, facilitate weekly PD for staff following the schedule set by the Ed Director

o With Program Director, support teaching staff to develop project- based learning each rotation

o Fulfill the 15-hour director training requirement as assigned by Directors

DATA ENTRY AND SUPERVISION OF ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF

o With Program Director, train onsite administrative staff in program data entry

o Oversee attendance entry snack attendance, holiday meals requests, and coordination with school foods team for attendance completion

o Make adjustments to class schedule and roster as needed and/or oversee this work

o Ensure that program has DYCD application and emergency contact info for all students

o Oversee the upkeep of the Emergency Contact List up to date in Staff binders using Reports

o Oversee the printing of weekly attendance sheets and distribute to staff

o Manage attendance reporting procedure

ADMINISTRATIVE

o Oversee the creation of Teaching Artist binders at the beginning of the year and update throughout the year

o Produce and also oversee the production of fliers, calendars, event updates to hand out to parents and students

o Oversee the production of Family Art Night program and sign in sheet for parents with contact information update option

MEETINGS

o Attend weekly Content Specialist Meeting with Ed Director and/or Multi Site Directors

o Attend one MMM a month

o Attend weekly Site Supervision Meeting and facilitate Professional Development topics most weeks

o Attend behavioral meetings held by day school with Site Directors when appropriate

o Participate in school meetings when assigned by the Program Director

PARENT ENGAGEMENT

o Assistant leads 2 Parent Workshop or Potlucks a year

o Assistant and Program Director work closely together on parent conversations and relationships

COMMUNICATION

o Communicate daily with teachers, school admin, and Program Director regarding day-to-day site details and program needs

o Communicate with teaching artists and teaching assistants (verbally and in writing) with suggestions and support around curricula and implementation

o Meet weekly with Education Director and Content Specialists to discuss training schedule

o Create monthly newsletter and submit it to Program Director, day schoolteachers, school administration, parents, etc.

ADDITIONAL

o Alternate leading Saturday trips with the Site Director

o Coordinate smaller and more specialized trips with staff

o Recruit or oversee recruitment during day school if program is in need of more students

o Additional Miscellaneous tasks as assigned by Program Director, Education Director, or Multi Site Programs Directors

QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree with at least 2 years of experience in a supervisory/oversight position, including management and development of program content, staff supervision, training, and coaching.

Comprehensive knowledge of the arts and non-profit management. Occasional flexible schedule is required. Bilingual-Spanish is recommended.

The Assistant Program Director- Content Specialist should possess the following: a record of successful teaching and creative or sports related accomplishments, strong classroom management, experience working with children’s needs, exceptional writing skills, ability to conceptualize and communicate ideas, possess outstanding organizational skills and interest in working with a team, and familiarity with Latino, African American and Asian cultures.

COMPENSATION

· Salary: $50,000 to $65,000 range based on degree(s), qualifications and experience.
