About Us

Gotham Park is the nonprofit grassroots organization reopening, revitalizing, and reactivating the forgotten spaces under the Manhattan side of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. Working with community partners and New York City agencies, we are creating a new community-led, world-class public space that nurtures connection, resilience, joy, discovery, and wonder.

Role

Gotham Park is hiring a part-time Program Assistant to support the execution and administration of the park's community programming. The Program Assistant will facilitate and assist with Gotham Park programming, equipment management, data collection, and administrative tasks that ensure programs run smoothly and community members have engaging experiences.

The Program Assistant contractor will report to Ariel Wilson, Lead Program & Event Coordinator and work collaboratively with Gotham Park's Senior Manager of Plaza Operations and the Gotham Park team. The position offers a meaningful opportunity to support the growth of this exciting Lower Manhattan public space and contribute to our organization's community impact.

Job Responsibilities:

Day-of Program Execution & Support
Carry out program setup according to standardized checklists, including equipment pull, tech setup, water/cups, surveys, and signage.
Provide on-site support during programs: community engagement, flyering, welcoming participants, taking photos and filing participant information.
Deploy and collect surveys during programs
Implement program breakdown including correct equipment storage, cleanup, device charging, and area restoration
Prepare site for programs: sweeping, litter removal, area maintenance
Equipment & Storage Management
Inventory equipment and supplies (yoga mats, basketballs, pickleball sets, cornhole, etc.)
Label and organize storage bins and boxes
Sort and categorize equipment by type and condition
Clean and maintain equipment (yoga mats, spray bottles, etc.); assign cleaning tasks to interns
Flag damaged or worn equipment for repair or replacement
Maintain accessible, organized storage so programs can be set up quickly; in collaboration with Lead Program & Event Coordinator and Senior Manager of Plaza Operations
In-Office Program Support & Administration
Organize and upload program photos into shared folders; send links to instructors
Organize survey responses and program feedback data in coordination with Finance and Development Associate.
Support the Lead Program & Event Coordinator in brainstorming and planning new programs
Input manual sign-up data and participant information into tracking systems
Monitor incoming program and event inquiries through Google Form submissions and email
Update and maintain the Program Inquiries Tracker with information from instructors and partners
Track internal program requests from the Gotham Park team in collaboration with Lead Program & Event Coordinator

Potential Weekly Schedule: 20-25 hours a week

*This schedule is subject to change based on programming needs

Monday: 9:30 AM -1:30 PM

Tuesday: 3:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Wednesday: 3:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Thursday: 3:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Saturday: 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM

Minimum Education and Experience

Minimum Education experience is a High School Diploma, Undergraduate degree preferred
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
Ability to follow written procedures and checklists
Comfortable with technology (Google Forms, Google Sheets, Asana, Eventbrite)
Experience with community-based work
Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) a plus

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Reliability and follow-through on tasks and commitments
Strong problem-solving skills; ability to plan logistics independently in coordination with the team.
Clear communication with instructors, volunteers, and interns
Friendly and respectful interaction with diverse community members and park visitors
Flexibility and ability to adapt to last-minute changes, weather cancellations, and unexpected needs

Physical Aspects of the Job

Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
Ability to lift, carry, and set up equipment (up to 40 lbs)
Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during programs
Ability to sit at a desk for administrative tasks
Use of phone required
Comfort working in outdoor environments

Terms

This is a part-time (20-25 hours per week) hourly 1099 position with an initial period of three (3) months, with the potential to extend based on the candidate's performance and the organization's programming needs. Peak programming periods (such as major events) may require additional hours (up to 25 hours) during those weeks with advance notice. This position has a starting hourly rate of $22 to $30 based on the candidate's experience.
