Addendum A: ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OF ACADEMICS (APA) RESPONSIBILITIES
The Assistant Principal of Academics (APA) is a leadership role and will work together as a team with their colleagues from other departments as well as teaching staff to accomplish the expected tasks with individual schools. APA is responsible for orchestrating effective teams for specific purposes as curriculum, instruction, assessment, resources, professional development, coaching, observation, evaluation, intervention, and extracurricular programs. APA will manage resources, and coordinate facility use in the schools and supervise programs and professional development of faculty.
Primary Role and Purpose:
Assist the Principal in instructional program administration and school level operations for K-8th grades and special education.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Curriculum:
· Working understanding of the curriculum provided by Concept Schools
· Encourage communication with Academic Directors at central office
· Communicate with CS academic directors for clarification and to request services
· Develop procedures for teachers to implement curriculum based on the schools’ needs and timetables
· Guide teachers on how to create their daily lesson plans by following the protocols set by academic departments at central office
· Assist in planning and assessing the educational programs
· Encourage the use of technology in the instructional process
Instruction:
· Monitor instructional plans (syllabus, annual plans, weekly plans, lesson plans, etc.)
· Recommend teaching strategies and the use of different or new technologies
· Research teaching methods and techniques
· Provide assistance to teaching staff in implementing research based instruction and interventions
Resources:
· Evaluation and selection of educational support materials along (e.g. textbooks, software, lab supplies, multimedia, etc.)
a. Inventory and manage instructional resources and determine needs for the next year
· Recommend, order, or authorize purchase of instructional materials, supplies, equipment, and visual aids designed to meet student educational needs and district standards
· Make sure staff has all needed resources for an effective instruction
· Evaluation and selection of educational support materials (e.g. textbooks, software, lab supplies, multimedia, etc.)
· Monitor use of materials in the classroom
· Inspect instructional equipment to determine if repairs are needed, and authorize necessary repairs
Assessment and Data Analysis:
· Assess and discuss implementation of education standards with school staff and how to re-teach for mastery
· Coordinate and supervise the school-wide implementation of standardized assessments
a. Standardized Assessments (up to 4 times a year)
b. OELPA (for ESL students)
c. AASWD (Alternate Assessment)
· Promote and monitor student achievement using student data and other outcomes and/or indicators
a. Hold data meetings with staff to analyze assessment results
i. Develop action plans (as needed) and provide them support in different instructional strategies to use in the classroom
ii. Group students for support services
Professional Development:
· Conduct or participate in workshops, committees, and conferences designed to promote the intellectual, social, and physical welfare of students
· Lead in the planning an implementation of staff development programs to support best classroom practices and professional growth
a. Plan and conduct teacher training programs and conferences dealing with new classroom procedures, instructional materials and equipment, and teaching aids
· Explain expectations and use of PowerSchool Student Information System “SIS”
Coaching:
· Model effective instructional and classroom management techniques that will lead to improved student performance.
a. Incorporate literacy instruction/coaching in all content areas.
· Mentor or coach teachers to improve their skills
· Perceive, affirm, and expand teachers' potentials
· Help teachers set and keep clear focus and goals
· Help teachers understand and use all supportive systems
· Model strategies and show the effective use of programs
· Monitor progress towards teachers’ improvement plans
Observation and Evaluation:
· Supervise, evaluate, and provide feedback that could strengthen teaching skills for teachers and support staff
a. Conduct formal evaluations and engage in walkthrough observations
· Assist in organization of school improvement plan with staff, parents and community members
· Assist Principal with the design, management, and implementation of information systems to manage and track progress on school goals and academic excellence indicators
· Hold employee evaluation conferences based on records of performance evaluation
· Assist Principal in interviewing, selecting and orienting new employees
· Convey the school’s mission to the public and encourage support in accomplishing the mission
Student support:
- Confer with parents, Employees, counselors, support service personnel, and students on matters of academics, attendance, and welfare
- Regularly meet with students and parents regarding their academic progress
- Hold at risk and retention meetings for students and their families
- Involve students, parents, staff, and other stakeholders in a collaborative effort to establish positive relationships
RTI:
- Oversee the RTI process
- Determination of the tiers (Tier I, II, III)
- Help teachers develop and implement classroom-based, developmentally appropriate interventions for individual children and groups of children to enhance their acquisition of social/emotional and cognitive skills
- Oversee data collection and progress monitoring at every tier
- Supports teachers in documenting children’s progress
- Utilize instructional and behavioral support tools (Planning forms, functional behavior assessment and behavior management plans) effectively
- Work with teachers, Special Education Coordinator, Building Employees, and School Psychologist to facilitate eligibility for special education
- Oversee the Title I services
- Coordinate the writing of Title I programs and efforts to assure successful implementations of the approved programs
Other Responsibilities:
· Work daily between 7:30 am – 4:00 pm with no less than 210 days
· Support the school's mission, philosophies, values, goals, and policies toward students, parents/guardians and coworkers
· Organize and foster a positive, safe environment that is conducive to best meeting the needs of all students, staff and parents
· Strengthen the school-wide PBIS program
· Actively participate in leadership, team, and department meetings
· Attend parent teacher conferences
· Participate in the educational audits conducted by Sponsor
· Arrange subs on a daily basis
· Work on student database (entering and updating students, staff, and course schedules)
· Review and analyze reports, records, and directives, and confer with teachers to obtain data required for planning department activities, such as new commitments, status of work in progress, and problems encountered
· Create the school master schedule
· Assist scheduling student activities by participating in the development of class schedules, teacher assignments and extracurricular activity schedules
· Monitor SPED and EL programs (schedules and implementation)
· Assist in the preparation of the school improvement plan with staff, parents and community members
· Assist in scheduling student activities by participating in the development of class schedules, employee assignments and extracurricular activity schedules
· Assist Principal in interviewing, selecting and orienting new employees
· Oversee student attendance records and assist the Administrative Assistant on truancy issues
· Convey the school’s mission to the public and encourage support in accomplishing the mission
Teaching Responsibilities:
- May be required up to 10 hours

Pay: $64,795.65 - $78,033.47 per year
