Full Job Description

Job Summary

This is a clinical lead role, not a traditional staff RN position. Dr. Leschke is building a lean, high-performance neurosurgical practice and the RN is the clinical and operational backbone of the team. You will serve as the primary clinical point of contact for patients, manage triage, own surgical scheduling, support both Dr. Leschke and the mid-level provider, lead the daily team huddle, and oversee the Medical Assistant.

On clinic days you are on-site and in the flow. The rest of the week you work remotely, which demands a specific kind of professional: someone who is highly self-directed, documents in real time so the entire team has current information and communicates proactively without needing to be prompted. At the same time, this is not a role for someone who operates in isolation - you are free to check in with Dr. Leschke throughout the day, and a structured daily team huddle is a cornerstone of how this practice runs.

One reality that shapes everything about this job: an emergency case can arrive without warning. When that happens, the clinical and administrative engine of the practice must not stall. The RN always operates ahead of the workload - tasks completed, documentation current, and nothing left to accumulate. Preparedness is the baseline.

Responsibilities

Clinical Operations & Triage

Serve as the clinical operations lead - the connective tissue between physician, mid-level, MA, and Practice Administrator
Apply RN-level clinical judgment to triage patient calls and messages; identify urgent cases and escalate appropriately
Ensure clinical protocols and administrative processes are followed consistently across the team
Support the mid-level provider in day-to-day clinical coordination and patient communication

Surgical Operations

Own surgical scheduling end-to-end - coordinate cases across hospital ORs with efficiency and precision
Manage surgical clearances, pre-op labs, imaging requirements, and hospital coordination
Collaborate with the mid-level provider on pre-op order sets and peri-operative medication plans
Ensure all surgical patients are thoroughly prepared and educated before their procedures
Maintain the weekly schedule review cadence - cases, clinic days, equipment, and scheduling conflicts

Patient Communication & Follow-Up

Field patient calls and inbox messages with RN-level clinical insight and a strong customer-service orientation
Conduct results calls, post-op follow-up, and treatment plan reinforcement in clear, patient-friendly language
Prioritize same-day communications wherever possible - neurosurgery-level responsiveness is the standard
Escalate complex clinical questions to the mid-level or Dr. Leschke promptly and document escalations

Team Communication & Daily Rhythm

Facilitate the structured daily team huddle - Dr. Leschke will lead these sessions, and the RN ensures they happen consistently as a cornerstone of the practice operating rhythm
Maintain open, proactive communication with Dr. Leschke throughout the day; surface issues early, don’t wait
Enter information into the EMR in real time so the entire team always has current, accurate patient data
Coordinate with Practice Administrator on administrative workflows, credentialing, compliance, and operational matters

MA Mentorship

Directly supervise and mentor the Medical Assistant in daily clinical workflow
Set clear expectations for chart prep quality, patient intake, and support tasks
Identify training needs and address performance gaps proactively and constructively

Post-Operative Care

Communicate standard post-operative protocols to patients with empathy and clinical clarity
Identify and escalate complex post-op issues to the mid-level or Dr. Leschke without delay
Contribute to process improvement as the practice grows - surface bottlenecks, propose solutions, follow through

Professional Conduct & Team Culture

Participate actively and constructively in the daily team huddle and team meetings
Maintain open, proactive communication with Dr. Leschke and the team throughout the day
Receive feedback with openness and apply it - continuous improvement is a shared value here
Communicate directly and constructively; bring solutions and positive energy to every interaction
Model the practice’s core values in every patient and team interaction: trust, collaboration, doing right

Experience

Active Wisconsin RN license required; BSN preferred
Minimum 2-3 years of clinical RN experience; neurosurgery, spine, or orthopedics strongly preferred
Demonstrated experience with surgical scheduling, pre/post-op education, and clinical triage
Experience in a hybrid or remote clinical coordination role is a strong plus
Strong EMR proficiency; ability to document in real time is essential; experience with eClinicalWorks preferred
Demonstrated ability to function independently without daily in-person supervision
Approved professional background screening
Sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, twist, and lift up to 30 pounds independently
