Full Job Description

CNC Lathe Machinist First Shift

Reports To: CNC Supervisor
Shift: First Shift (7:00 AM – 3:20 PM)

Position Summary

The CNC Lathe Machinist is responsible for independently setting up, operating, and troubleshooting CNC lathes in a high-mix, low-volume aerospace and defense manufacturing environment. This role requires strong machining knowledge, blueprint interpretation skills, and the ability to consistently produce precision components that meet customer and quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Independently setup and operate CNC lathes from start to finish.
Read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and GD&T requirements.
Select, install, and adjust tooling, inserts, and workholding as required.
Verify program accuracy and make approved machine offset adjustments as needed.
Optimize speeds, feeds, tooling, and machining methods to improve quality and efficiency.
Perform and document first-piece and in-process inspections to verify product conformity throughout the manufacturing process.
Perform in-process inspections using micrometers, calipers, bore gages, thread gages, indicators, and other precision measuring equipment.
Troubleshoot machining, tooling, dimensional, and process-related issues.
Verify correct program revisions, tooling, and setup requirements prior to production.
Safely operate CNC equipment in both setup and production modes.
Support continuous improvement efforts related to quality, productivity, and process capability.
Assist in training and mentoring less experienced machinists and operators when needed.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Preferred Qualifications

3+ years of CNC lathe machining experience preferred.
Demonstrated ability to independently perform machine setups and troubleshoot machining issues.
Strong blueprint reading and dimensional inspection skills.
Working knowledge of GD&T and Experience holding tight tolerances
Experience using precision measuring equipment including micrometers, calipers, bore gages, and thread gages.
Experience with HAAS CNC controls preferred.
Experience in a job shop, aerospace, defense, or other high-mix/low-volume manufacturing environment preferred.
Experience completing in-process inspection documentation preferred.
CAD/CAM programming experience is a plus, but not required.
Ability to work with minimal supervision and take ownership of assigned jobs.
