Location: Portland, Oregon (Hybrid)

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer (direct report)

Type: Full-Time

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead our accounting function and serve as a strategic partner to the CFO and leadership team. This is a hands-on leadership role in a vertically integrated cannabis company: you will own the accuracy and integrity of our financial statements from the ground up, while also contributing to the strategic direction of the business. The right candidate is equally comfortable rolling up their sleeves to reconcile an account or troubleshoot an inventory variance as they are presenting financial results to leadership. We're looking for someone who takes genuine ownership of their work — not just completing tasks, but ensuring the finance function as a whole runs with rigor and reliability.

What You'll Do

Take full responsibility for the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of the company's financial statements
Report directly to the CFO and serve as a strategic partner to the CFO and leadership team — contributing to forecasting, cash flow management, and business decision-making
Oversee the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring deadlines are met and results are reliable
Take ownership of the monthly reporting package — preparation, accuracy, and timely delivery to the CFO and leadership team
Support the CFO in budget development, and provide ongoing budget support including budget-to-actual analysis throughout the year
Own the full accounting cycle: general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll coordination, reconciliations, and financial reporting
Manage inventory accounting across our operations, including cost accounting, inventory valuation, and variance analysis
Ensure financial reporting is compliant with U.S. GAAP and maintain strong internal controls
Lead, develop, and mentor accounting staff
Support financial systems and process improvement initiatives, including work within Sage Intacct
Coordinate with external partners including tax accountants, auditors, and lenders
Serve as backup for the accounting team as needed, stepping into day-to-day tasks to keep operations running smoothly
Get into the weeds when needed — this is a hands-on role where no task is beneath the position

What You'll BringRequired:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including full cycle accounting
Strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP
Hands-on inventory and cost accounting experience
Demonstrated experience owning a month-end close and producing accurate financial statements
Proven ability to operate at both the detail level and the strategic level

Highly Preferred:

Sage Intacct experience
CPA or CMA designation

A Plus:

Cannabis industry experience, including familiarity with IRC Section 280E and industry-specific compliance considerations
Experience in manufacturing or vertically integrated operations
Experience with ERP implementations or system migrations

Confidentiality ExpectationsThis role involves regular access to highly sensitive financial, operational, and personnel information, including compensation data, ownership and transaction matters, and strategic plans. The Controller is expected to maintain strict confidentiality at all times, exercise discretion in all internal and external communications, and handle sensitive information in accordance with company policy. A signed confidentiality agreement is a condition of employment.

Additional Requirements

Successful completion of a background check is required as a condition of employment
Must be 21 years of age or older and able to meet all applicable state cannabis industry licensing and permitting requirements
Hybrid work schedule with regular on-site presence at our Portland, Oregon office

Compensation & Benefits

Pay: $115,000.00 - $135,000.00 per year
