Full Job Description

Purpose:

The Charge Nurse provides nursing services to residents in the assigned work area in compliance with current applicable federal, state, local and facility standards, guidelines and regulations and as may be directed by the Director of Nursing to assure that the highest degree of quality health care of our residents is maintained at all times.

Primary Job Duties: (*denotes essential functions)

* Directs and renders care to the residents within an assigned unit as a licensed staff member. Makes assignments, admits, transfers, and discharges residents.
* Provides leadership by working cooperatively with nursing assistants and other nursing co-workers.
* Administers medications, receives doctors’ orders, charts, assists physicians, supervises other nursing staff.
* Reviews medication orders and medication sheets for completeness and accuracy of information, accuracy in the transcription of physician orders, and adherence to stop order policies.
*Provide direct resident care as directed and when needed. (i.e., assist with lifting, transferring, turning residents).
* Makes daily visits to resident’ room to observe and evaluate physical and emotional status/needs of the residents during shift. Notifies supervisor or Director of any change in resident condition.
* Receives and follows up on resident report from nurse on previous shift.
* Administers prescribed medication and treatments as ordered by the physician. Charts same and notes all effects.
* Notifies physician and family members or responsible party of any change in the resident’s condition according to facility procedure.
* Completes incident reports promptly on residents and on employees when necessary.
* Assists in the job performance evaluation of nursing staff which are assigned in work area. Assists in the counseling of staff in areas of job performance conduct and quality of care delivered.
* Converses with residents and their families regarding problems and possible solutions, progress and plan of care and conveys a genuine sense of concern.
* Performs all duties in a safe manner and insures that staff follows infection control procedures and universal precautions in accordance with facility procedures.
* Improves professional knowledge through profession reading, in-service education and other avenues. Attends in-service education sessions on a regular basis.
* Maintains confidentiality of all pertinent care information to assure protection of resident rights.
* Makes written and oral reports/recommendations to department director concerning operation of nursing staff.
* Participates in Overall Plan of care for each resident. Assists in completion of MDS form.
* Assists in orientation and training of newly assigned personnel in job duties on unit as well as supervises and instructs other nursing personnel.
* Receives verbal orders from physicians and charts on the required forms.
* Answers telephone inquiries in a professional manner.
* Orients new residents and their family members to functions of the Department.
* Forwards diet changes to Dietary Department.
* Takes TPR, B/P, etc as necessary and charts same.
* Performs other duties as necessary and appropriate or as directed by the Department Director or Charge Nurse.
* Starts IV’s, administers IV antibiotics/add meds to IV bags. ABT/vitamins/mineral.
* Pronounces death.

Educational and Nursing Experience Requirements:

The Registered Nurse must be licensed as a Registered Nurse by the State of California and be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Experience in long term care and prior experience is preferred.

Other Requirements:

1. Must have a good working knowledge of the needs of the senior adult population and their families.

2. Must have the ability to work with all types of people.

3. Must have a commitment to work as a team member and be able to work with minimal supervision.

4. Must exude a compassionate, empathetic and supportive character toward the residents of Palm Village.

5. Must be sensitive to, respectful of, and willing to become knowledgeable of Palm Village theology and interdenominational services.

6. Must be knowledgeable of practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long term care.

7. Must have leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional staff.

8. Must have the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures, etc., that are necessary for providing quality care.

9. Must be computer literate with typing skills. excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Pay: $40.00 - $49.00 per hour
