Full Job Description

Southwest Virginia Cardiology is looking for an experienced Licensed Practical Nurse to provide clinical assistance for our growing cardiology practice!

This is an onsite clinic based position.

Job Overview:

The Triage Nurse assures that communication with each caller will be handled in a professional and tactful manner. When appropriate, the caller’s symptoms will be assessed and triaged using the nursing process and approved guidelines in order to assist in obtaining the appropriate level of care and/or self-care advice. This position reports directly to the Clinical Manager, Practice Services. Requires knowledge and critical thinking skills when assisting with patient care. Performing assessments and triage phone calls to assess patients symptoms and needs. Direct interaction with providers and practitioners during clinics. Refilling medications and reviewing test/lab results. Should be comfortable with scheduling appointments, completing patient call backs, communication with clinical staff, reviewing normal lab results/testing and obtaining medication prior authorizations.

Job Qualifications:

High School diploma or GED equivalent (REQUIRED)
Active Virginia License for Practical Nursing/LPN or RN (REQUIRED)
Must possess/maintain current BLS CPR certification (REQUIRED)
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Strong computer and typing skills
Previous independent nursing experience regarding patient assessments/triage of symptoms (REQUIRED)
Preferred: previous clinical office or telephonic triage nurse experience

Essential Functions:

Triage patient calls and messages
Provide effective communication with providers about patient care
Provide back-up to in person clinic staffing if needed/requested
Complete paperwork for patient assistance/financial assistance
Assessing patients who need quick medical attention and determining what type of care they require
Making critical assessments and diagnoses with report promptly to providers
Using a centralized EMR database to read patients' notes and health information
Directing patients to the most appropriate form of care once they've received as much information as possible from the patient
Recommending that the patient seeks emergency treatment, schedules a consultation with a doctor or treats the condition themselves
Helping health care facilities by reducing patient numbers and waiting times, especially if hospitalized medical care isn't necessary
Assist with scheduling patient testing or appointments as needed
Communicates regularly with providers as assigned
Obtaining prior authorizations or medication coverage/assistance
Communicates with multiple members of the patient care team internal and external to the practice

Knowledge/Abilities:

An ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, providers, coworkers, staff and medical service providers.
Strong ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; thoughts are logical and clearly expressed.
Excellent organizational abilities and documentation skills.
Must be capable of making independent nursing decisions with previous independent nursing experience.
Must be able to work well under stress and relate to the general public, nurses and providers in a tactful manner.
Must have adequate typing skills and basic computer knowledge.

Physical/Environmental Demands:

The Triage Nurse will be assigned a workstation, computer, and telephonic equipment in a regular office environment. The nurse must have good manual and finger dexterity, excellent verbal and written communication, hearing and visual acuity and color distinction. The nurse must sit in front of a computer screen for prolonged periods of time.

Work Schedule/Hours:

Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm
No weekends/No On-Call/ No Nights
Clinic closed for major holidays
