THE ROLE
We are seeking a Senior Cost Accountant to lead all cost accounting, inventory control, and product costing activities for our manufacturing operations. This role owns the costing methodology within Epicor, ensuring accurate item-level costs, reliable inventory valuation, and meaningful financial insights.
As a key partner to Operations and Marketing, this role provides analysis of manufacturing performance, product costs, and margin improvement opportunities. The role also supports budgeting and forecasting, develops management reporting, and drives process and ERP enhancements related to costing and inventory.
This full-time, in-person position is based at our Austin Corporate Office with an annual salary of $131,600.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Cost Accounting and Inventory Leadership - managing and improving cost accounting functions
- Identify, develop, and implement costing methodology in the ERP system (Epicor)
o Ensures costing methodology is appropriate to support improved profitability and efficiencies.
- Maintaining and improving upon the existing cost accounting functions
o Periodic development of new labor and overhead rates to ensure all manufacturing costs are absorbed into the individual item costs.
o Objective is to ensure accurate item-level costs that will support more profitable decision-making.
- Develop, maintain, and improve cost accounting processes for accurate reporting of production costs, inventory valuation, and profitability analysis.
o Custodian of Senox's costing and inventory systems
o Ensure integrity and accuracy of the cost accounting system.
o Proactively find solutions and create best practices for the cost accounting function.
- Identify, develop, and implement Inventory Control processes
o Perform inventory valuations and own the reconciliations of inventory to the general ledger
- Provide support related to cost accounting and inventory for all external audit processes.
Business Partnership - providing direct support to Operations and Marketing leadership
- Support Operations leadership to better understand manufacturing issues and how they impact financial results, as well as educate/inform on cost drivers and variances.
o Analyze and report on manufacturing operations (material usage, labor, overhead) and inventory to monitor trends and identify variances.
o Provide visibility to areas that can improve efficiencies and lower costs
o Coordinate processes for establishing/setting budgets and forecasts for manufacturing expenses and production volumes.
- Support Marketing leadership and Product Director with information on product costs, as well as educating and informing on cost trends and implications.
o Analyze and report on product costs to monitor trends and identify variances.
o Provide accurate and timely financial information on product costs that may be needed to manage pricing and drive improved product margins.
o Provide cost analysis for new products. Coordinate any required updates to the Epicor system.
- Interpret financial results for business leaders
Financial Analysis & Reporting - providing information that leads to more profitable decision making
- Design and deliver robust management reporting, analysis, and decision support models
- Prepare various financial analyses related to manufacturing costs, inventory, and expense information as needed for decision-making support.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning cycles by delivering detailed cost input and insights.
- Identify and implement process improvements related to ERP workflows and financial reporting.
Systems and Policies
- Develop and maintain cost accounting systems, policies, and procedures to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Provide leadership to future Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) enhancements/implementations related to cost accounting
- Serve as the Epicor ERP subject matter expert for costing and inventory modules, support enhancements, and updates.
- Leads implementation of cost accounting for new cultivation sites.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration.
- 6-10 years of experience in a cost accounting position in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience in manufacturing departments/staff/activities, cost accounting, reporting, and variance analysis.
- Ability to facilitate cross-company teams, including manufacturing staff.
- Analytical mindset with proven ability to interpret financial data and provide actionable insights.
- Demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills needed to think through complex situations and opportunities.
- Proven ability to prioritize objectives and duties. Willingness to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and to change priorities when needed.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Sound planning and organizational skills.
- Desire to drive continuous process improvements.
- High level of proficiency using Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.
- Experience working with a manufacturing and distribution ERP System, Epicor a plus.
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes (bill of materials, assemblies, production rates).
