Job Summary:
We are seeking a passionate, creative, and technically skilled 3D & Virtual Production Designer to help define the future of storytelling for our brand, game studios, and partners. This role is ideal for a 3D artist who thrives at the intersection of cinematic design, world building, and hi-end 3D graphics.
You will be integral in designing, developing, and building high-fidelity 3D environments, virtual sets, and immersive backgrounds for virtual production, broadcast content, and video marketing initiative. Leveraging Unreal Engine as your primary world-building platform, you will create visually compelling environments that support both real-time production workflows and creative concept development, utilizing our studio’s state-of-the-art LED volume.
In addition to virtual production, you will help develop 3D motion graphics, animation sequences, broadcast graphic packages, and abstract 3D visual systems utilizing Cinema 4D and related tools. This position requires both artistic and technical expertise, balancing visual design aesthetics, lighting, asset creation, performance optimization, and production scalability.
The ideal candidate is deeply passionate about environment design, world-building, emerging storytelling technologies, and the convergence of gaming and entertainment production. You are equally comfortable developing photorealistic virtual environments, stylized motion design systems, and visually striking broadcast graphics. You stay current with evolving Unreal Engine workflows, virtual production techniques, real-time rendering technologies, and modern 3D design trends.
Essential Functions:
1. Virtual Production Environment Design & Development
- Design, build, and maintain high-quality 3D environments, virtual sets, and digital worlds within Unreal Engine for virtual production, broadcast, and marketing content.
- Develop visually compelling environments that support storytelling, cinematography, lighting, real-time rendering, and LED volume workflows.
- Create and optimize assets, materials, shaders, landscapes, architecture, and environmental effects that meet both artistic and technical requirements.
- Collaborate with Art Directors, Designers, Cinematographers, Producers, and Production Engineers to translate creative briefs into immersive virtual production experiences.
- Build modular environment systems and reusable asset libraries that support scalability across multiple productions.
- Establish lighting, atmosphere, mood, and visual fidelity standards within Unreal Engine environments.
- Ensure all environments are optimized for real-time performance while maintaining visual quality and artistic intent.
2. 3D Design & Motion Graphics Development
- Design and create 3D assets, animation sequences, and abstract visual systems in Cinema 4D for use across motion graphics, title sequences, broadcast graphic packages, and production content.
- Develop visual elements that integrate seamlessly between C4D and traditional motion design workflows.
- Support the creation of graphics packages, show opens, transitions, lower thirds, virtual stage elements, and event branding systems.
3. Technical Pipeline Development & Innovation
- Partner with technical teams to establish and improve virtual production workflows with Unreal Engine, C4D, Disguise, and Pixera.
- Maintain expertise in real-time rendering technologies and evaluate new tools, plugins, and workflows that improve efficiency, visual quality, and production scalability.
- Assist in troubleshooting technical challenges related to environment development, rendering, optimization, and virtual production integration.
- Document workflows, best practices, and technical processes to support team growth and operational consistency.
4. Creative Collaboration & Production Support
- Collaborate closely with creative and production teams throughout the creative process.
- Participate in creative reviews, concept development sessions, and production planning meetings.
- Present visual concepts, environment designs, and technical solutions to internal stakeholders and partners.
- Maintain awareness of contemporary design trends, environment art techniques, gaming culture, entertainment branding, and virtual production advancements.
- Help elevate the team's creative and technical capabilities through knowledge sharing, experimentation, and continuous learning.
Required Skills & Abilities:
- Advanced proficiency in Unreal Engine, including environment creation, lighting, materials, rendering, optimization, and scene assembly.
- Advanced proficiency in Cinema 4D, including modeling, animation, procedural workflows, rendering, and motion design applications.
- Strong understanding of composition, color theory, cinematography, lighting design, and visual communication.
- Strong understanding of virtual production workflows, LED volume production, real-time rendering technologies, and image-based lighting techniques.
- Strong portfolio showcasing world-building, 3D environment design, lighting, virtual production work, and 3D animation.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
Education & Experience:
- 5+ years of professional experience in 3D design and animation, virtual production, or related discipline.
- Demonstrate professional experience designing, building, and optimizing environments within Unreal Engine for virtual production.
- Experience creating and optimizing 3D assets, textures, materials, and shaders for real-time environments.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary creative teams and collaborating across design, animation, editorial, and production departments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience supporting virtual production stages, LED volume productions, or large-scale live entertainment experiences.
- Familiarity with technical workflows within Disguise and Pixera.
- Experience creating procedural environments using Houdini or similar procedural content creation tools.
- Knowledge of camera tracking, virtual cinematography, and real-time production pipelines.
- Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, After Effects, and Premiere Pro.
- Passion for video games, interactive entertainment, and gaming culture.
- Experience working on entertainment, broadcast, gaming, or large-scale brand campaigns.
- Curiosity and enthusiasm for emerging technologies, real-time content creation, and the future of virtual production.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
Work Environment:
- This role routinely requires using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and printers.
- This position may require the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Must be able to operate various electronic devices.
Position Type & Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time Hybrid-Seattle, WA role, defined as a combination of remote and in-office / on-site work within the Greater Seattle Area (King, Pierce, and Snohomish Counties). This person would work remotely most days, but onsite as needed for client meetings and support. The office generally operates from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the days and hours of this position may vary week-to-week. Compensation will be determined based on the skills, qualifications, and experience of the applicant along with the requirements of the position, and the Company reserves the right to modify this pay range at any time.
