Full Job Description

Controller

Location: Mount Vernon, WA
Employment Type: Full-Time Salaried
Reports To: President

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controller to oversee the company’s accounting and financial operations. The Controller will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, managing the accounting system, overseeing job costing and construction accounting, and providing financial reporting and analysis to company leadership.

The ideal candidate has strong construction-industry accounting experience, understands project/job costing, and can balance hands-on accounting responsibilities with strategic financial oversight.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and cash management.
Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
Manage the month-end and year-end close processes.
Oversee job costing, including labor, materials, subcontractors, equipment, and other project-related costs.
Monitor project financial performance, budgets, committed costs, change orders, billings, and profitability.
Work closely with project managers and operations to ensure accurate job cost reporting and forecasting.
Review work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and percentage-of-completion accounting.
Oversee project billing, including progress billings, retainage, collections, and contract accounting.
Maintain accurate accounts receivable and support collection efforts on outstanding balances.
Manage cash flow forecasting and banking relationships.
Establish and maintain effective internal accounting controls and procedures.
Coordinate annual financial statements, tax filings, audits, and other external financial requirements.
Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning.
Provide financial analysis and recommendations to ownership and senior management.
Ensure compliance with applicable accounting principles, tax requirements, and company policies.
Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting systems, and financial controls.
Support insurance, bonding, banking, and other financial reporting requirements common to the construction industry.
Perform other financial and accounting duties as needed.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within the construction industry.
Previous Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting management experience preferred.
Strong understanding of construction accounting and job-cost accounting.
Experience with WIP schedules and percentage-of-completion accounting.
Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting.
Experience with construction accounting software and/or ERP systems.
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
Ability to communicate effectively with ownership, project managers, employees, subcontractors, vendors, and outside professionals.
Ability to work independently while also leading and supporting an accounting team.
