Location: VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System (VASNHCS), Reno, NV
Assignment Type: Full-Time Contract
Schedule: Multiple shifts available, including holidays and overtime as needed
Contract Duration: Base Year with four option years available

Pay Rate: $22 - $25/hr

Position Overview

We are seeking qualified Medical Technologists – Phlebotomists and a Lead Phlebotomist to support the Department of Veterans Affairs Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (PALMS) at the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System in Reno, Nevada. This role provides comprehensive phlebotomy and specimen processing services in a fast-paced healthcare environment dedicated to serving our nation's Veterans.

Lead Phlebotomist

Draw Station: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM

Phlebotomist Positions

Draw Station: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM – 1:30 PM
Processing Area: Monday–Friday, 5:00 AM – 1:30 PM (2 openings)
Processing Area & Floor Draws: Monday–Friday, 1:30 PM – 9:00 PM (2 openings)
Processing Area & Floor Draws: Monday–Friday, 9:00 PM – 5:30 AM (1 opening)

Overtime and holiday coverage may be required based on facility needs.

Key Responsibilities

Perform venipuncture, capillary blood collection, and specimen collection using approved techniques.
Collect and process blood, urine, and other laboratory specimens.
Verify patient identification and ensure proper specimen labeling and documentation.
Accession specimens into the laboratory information system.
Process, package, and transport specimens according to laboratory protocols.
Perform specimen centrifugation and preparation procedures.
Answer pneumatic tube station deliveries and distribute specimens appropriately.
Maintain phlebotomy and accessioning areas in a clean, organized, and compliant manner.
Monitor and replenish laboratory supplies and inventory.
Adhere to all infection control, safety, and laboratory quality standards.
Provide exceptional customer service to Veterans, providers, and staff.
Utilize computer systems and electronic medical records to support laboratory operations.

Additional Responsibilities for Lead Phlebotomist

Serve as the primary point of contact between laboratory leadership and phlebotomy staff.
Assist with administrative and operational support functions.
Help coordinate daily workflow and staffing needs.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of one (1) year of phlebotomy experience OR a nationally/state-recognized phlebotomy certification.
Current phlebotomy certification, where applicable.
Ability to meet all licensing and credentialing requirements.
Three professional references from laboratory supervisors, clinical instructors, or physicians.
Ability to pass a VA background investigation.
Physical examination and healthcare worker certification completed within 60 days prior to assignment start.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare experience.
Experience working in hospital laboratories, outpatient clinics, or high-volume specimen processing environments.
Strong customer service and communication skills.
Experience with laboratory information systems and specimen accessioning.
