Full Job Description

Job Title: Grading Equipment Operator/Laborer

Reports To: Foreman or Superintendent

Position Summary

The Grading Equipment Operator/Laborer is responsible for operating heavy equipment and performing manual labor associated with site development, road construction, grading, excavation, and utility installation projects. This position requires the safe and efficient operation of construction equipment while assisting crews with general labor tasks as needed to ensure projects are completed on schedule and according to specifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operate heavy equipment including bulldozers, excavators, motor graders, skid steers, rollers, and loaders in a safe and efficient manner.
Perform grading activities to establish proper elevations, slopes, and drainage according to project plans.
Assist with excavation, backfilling, trenching, and site preparation.
Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of equipment and report maintenance needs.
Perform routine equipment maintenance, including checking fluids, greasing, and cleaning equipment.
Assist crew members with manual labor tasks such as shoveling, raking, installing erosion control, and setting grade stakes.
Load and unload materials, tools, and equipment.
Read and interpret grade stakes, blueprints, and project specifications.
Follow all company safety policies and procedures, including wearing required PPE.
Maintain a clean and organized work area.
Work collaboratively with supervisors and crew members to meet production goals.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Previous experience operating heavy construction equipment preferred.
Knowledge of grading, excavation, and site development practices.
Ability to safely operate equipment in varying terrain and weather conditions.
Ability to read and understand construction plans and grade stakes preferred.
Valid driver's license preferred.
Strong understanding of workplace safety practices.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and perform repetitive motions for extended periods.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
Ability to safely enter and exit heavy equipment multiple times throughout the day.

Work Environment

Outdoor construction sites with exposure to dust, noise, moving equipment, and varying weather conditions.
Work schedules may vary based on project needs and weather conditions.
Overtime, weekends, and travel may be required.
