Managing Director, State & Local Tax (SALT) Compliance & Advisory

Position Summary

The Brennan Group is seeking an experienced and strategic Manager of State & Local Tax (SALT) Compliance & Advisory to lead the firm’s SALT practice across compliance and advisory services. This role is responsible for ensuring technical excellence, timely and accurate delivery, proactive client advisory, and sustainable practice growth. The Manager serves as a trusted advisor to clients, a technical leader to the internal team, and a key contributor to the firm’s broader growth and operational initiatives.

Mission

To lead, grow, and elevate The Brennan Group’s Sales & Use Tax Compliance and Advisory Services Department by delivering accurate compliance, research, actionable insights, and innovative solutions that simplify complex tax issues for clients—while creating scalable systems, supporting team development, and driving recurring revenue

Key Responsibilities

Client Advisory & Relationship Management

Serve as primary point of contact and senior advisor for key SALT clients
Provide strategic guidance on sales & use tax issues and tax compliance matters
Build and maintain strong, trusted client relationships through proactive communication and advisory insight.
Lead resolution of complex tax discrepancies with state and local taxing authorities
Support client retention and expansion through high-quality service and thought leadership

SALT Compliance & Technical Oversight

Ensure timely, accurate preparation, review, and filing of all state and local tax returns
Oversee monitoring of data inputs, tax codes, calculations, and statutory deadlines
Ensure 100% compliance with applicable tax laws and regulations across jurisdictions
Research complex SALT issues and provide technical guidance to clients and internal teams
Monitor regulatory and legislative changes impacting clients and the firm

Advisory Strategy & Tax Planning

Identify and lead execution of SALT planning opportunities to minimize client tax exposure while maintaining compliance
Develop advisory frameworks and best practices for recurring SALT issues
Support strategic decision-making for clients through data-driven tax analysis
Contribute to special projects, studies, and advisory engagements as required

Leadership & Team Development

Lead and manage the current compliance team.
Mentor, and develop SALT professionals, fostering a culture of accuracy, accountability, and professional growth
Provide technical training and guidance to SALT team members and cross-functional teams
Ensure appropriate staffing, tools, and resources are in place to support compliance and advisory work
Promote open communication and collaboration across departments

Operational Excellence & Practice Growth

Oversee workflow, project management, and engagement delivery to ensure deadlines and quality standards are met
Improve processes, systems, and technology utilization to enhance efficiency and scalability
Collaborate with leadership on practice development, client growth, and service expansion initiatives
Support business development efforts through prospect and client meetings for expansion of compliance and advisory services.

Qualifications

Required

Strong understanding of multistate tax laws and SALT compliance requirements
Demonstrated experience managing complex SALT compliance and advisory engagements
Proven leadership and people-development skills
High attention to detail and strong analytical thinking
Excellent communication, client relationship, and problem-solving skills
Ability to manage multiple clients and priorities while maintaining quality standards
Proficiency in tax compliance software and related tools
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

Preferred

CPA, JD, advanced tax credentials
Experience in professional services or consulting environments
Track record of practice growth, client expansion, or advisory development
Experience working with former auditors, legal teams, or multi-disciplinary tax professionals
