Preschool Teacher Assistant – Novice Class (12–24 Months)

Position Type

Part-Time

Schedule: Tuesdays & Thursdays, 8:30 AM–12:30 PM
Additional Opportunity: Substitute teaching on non-scheduled days, as available
Compensation: $18.00–$20.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications

About St. Luke’s Preschool

St. Luke’s Memorial Church Preschool is a Christian, play-based, Reggio-inspired preschool community where young children are nurtured through meaningful relationships, hands-on exploration, creativity, and play.

We are seeking a warm, dependable, and nurturing Teacher Assistant to join our Novice Class, serving children approximately 12–24 months of age. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone who genuinely enjoys working with very young children and understands the importance of patience, consistency, responsive caregiving, and creating a safe and loving environment.

Our Novice classroom is designed to support children's earliest experiences in a group learning environment while honoring each child's individual development, interests, and needs.

About the Position

The Teacher Assistant works closely with the Lead Teacher to support the daily classroom experience. This includes actively engaging with children, assisting with routines and caregiving needs, preparing the classroom environment, and helping create a calm and joyful space where young children feel safe, connected, and encouraged to explore.

Because our program is small and collaborative, reliability and teamwork are especially important. We depend on each member of our teaching team to provide consistency for our children, families, and fellow teachers.

Responsibilities

Support the Lead Teacher in providing responsive care and engaging learning experiences for children ages 12–24 months.
Build warm, trusting relationships with children and respond thoughtfully to their individual needs.
Actively engage children in play, exploration, sensory experiences, and age-appropriate activities.
Assist with daily routines including snack, handwashing, diapering, toileting, transitions, and rest as applicable.
Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and welcoming classroom environment.
Clean, sanitize, and rotate classroom materials and toys as needed.
Support children's developing independence and social-emotional skills.
Provide calm, consistent, and positive guidance when children are having difficulty.
Communicate respectfully and professionally with families and teaching staff.
Work collaboratively with the Lead Teacher and preschool team.
Follow St. Luke's Preschool policies, procedures, health and safety practices, and classroom routines.
Participate in staff meetings, training, professional development, and school events as required.
Maintain dependable attendance and arrive prepared and on time for scheduled shifts.

Qualifications & Expectations

Previous experience working with children 12–24 months of age is required.
Experience in a preschool, childcare, early learning, or similar setting preferred.
Current CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain certification before beginning employment.
Warm, patient, nurturing, and responsive approach to working with young children.
Dependable, punctual, and consistent.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Able to work collaboratively as part of a teaching team.
Flexible and willing to support the needs of the classroom.
Comfortable participating in active, hands-on play and caregiving.
Comfortable working outdoors with children in a variety of weather conditions.
Willingness to learn and grow within St. Luke's teaching philosophy.
