Metallurgical Laboratory Manager

Location: Houston, TX
Company: Whitehouse Labs
Employment Type: Full-Time

About the Position

Whitehouse Labs is seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Metallurgical Laboratory Manager to lead our metallurgical testing laboratory. This position is responsible for managing laboratory operations, performing advanced metallurgical testing, maintaining quality standards, and training laboratory personnel.

The ideal candidate will have a strong hands-on background in mechanical and metallurgical testing and the ability to teach and develop technicians. This is a leadership position for someone who is comfortable working both in the laboratory and managing the people and processes that keep the lab operating efficiently.

Key ResponsibilitiesLaboratory Management

Manage the daily operations of the metallurgical laboratory.
Supervise, train, and develop laboratory technicians and personnel.
Establish and maintain consistent testing procedures and laboratory workflows.
Ensure testing is performed accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with applicable specifications and standards.
Review testing results and reports for accuracy and completeness.
Assist with scheduling, workload management, and prioritization of customer projects.
Maintain laboratory equipment and coordinate calibration, maintenance, and repair as necessary.
Help maintain laboratory quality systems and documentation.
Identify opportunities to improve laboratory efficiency, capabilities, and employee training.

Hardness Testing

The Laboratory Manager must have the ability to perform, interpret, and teach the following hardness testing methods:

Brinell Hardness Testing
Rockwell Hardness Testing
Vickers Hardness Testing
Knoop Microhardness Testing
Macrohardness Testing
Microhardness Testing
Case Depth Determination
Effective Case Depth and Total Case Depth evaluation
Hardness traverses and hardness profile interpretation

The candidate must understand proper sample preparation, test locations, indentation requirements, calibration, and interpretation of hardness results.

Metallography and Metallurgical Evaluation

The successful candidate should have experience performing and training others in:

Macro examination and macroetching
Microstructural examination
Metallographic sample preparation
Mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching
Grain size determination
Grain flow evaluation
Microstructure identification and analysis
Case depth evaluation
Weld and base material examination
Interpretation and documentation of metallurgical findings

Chemical Analysis

Experience with chemical analysis of metallic materials is required or strongly preferred, including:

Material chemistry verification
Chemical composition analysis
Interpretation of chemistry results
Material identification and verification
Understanding applicable material specifications and acceptance requirements

Corrosion Testing

The Laboratory Manager should have experience with, or the ability to learn and manage, corrosion testing activities, including:

Corrosion test preparation and evaluation
Interpretation of corrosion test results
Metallurgical examination related to corrosion failures
Documentation and reporting of corrosion findings

Qualifications

Previous experience working in a metallurgical or materials testing laboratory.
Leadership or supervisory experience strongly preferred.
Extensive hands-on experience with hardness testing and metallography.
Ability to perform and teach Brinell, Rockwell, Vickers, and Knoop hardness testing.
Experience evaluating case depth, macrohardness, and microhardness.
Experience with grain size and grain flow analysis.
Knowledge of chemical analysis of metals.
Experience with corrosion testing or corrosion evaluation preferred.
Strong understanding of metallurgical sample preparation and examination.
Ability to read and interpret customer specifications, industry standards, and testing requirements.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate results.
Ability to train and develop laboratory technicians.
Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Experience working within a quality system is preferred.
Experience with ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory environments is strongly preferred.
