Controller (Construction Industry)

Company: DM Premier Group

Location: Agoura Hills, CA

DM Premier Group is a luxury real estate investment and construction company based in Agoura Hills,

CA. We acquire, develop, and sell high-end properties, and undertake custom home construction directly

for clients.

We are seeking a hands-on Controller to oversee the company's day-to-day bookkeeping and accounting operations across its multiple project entities to support informed operational and investment decision-making. This is an extremely high-volume office with multiple competing deadlines. The Controller reports directly to the principal, supervises a small team of bookkeepers, and works closely with production to ensure seamless financial operations.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Oversight & Bookkeeping: Oversee all accounting operations — billing, A/R, A/P, payroll, general ledger, journal entries, intercompany transactions, and month-end close.
Project Accounting: Handle construction-specific financial tasks including job costing, progressbilling (AIA), WIP reporting, and tracking labor/material variances.
Banking Operations: Process construction draw requests; coordinate with bankers, lenders, investors, and partners; manage company credit cards and mortgage payments; and monitor accounts for fraudulent activity.
Cash Flow Management: Determine weekly cash flow availability and needs, and coordinate funding with the principal.
Reporting: Prepare and publish monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for the principal.
Tax Coordination: Complete year-end close and support tax return preparation; coordinate with outside tax preparers. Manage vendor files and issue 1099s.
Property Tax & Insurance: Monitor property tax obligations to ensure timely payment, and track insurance policy renewals to ensure continuous coverage.
Reconciliations: Oversee and validate month-end bank and credit card reconciliations across all entities.
Process Improvement: Develop and document internal controls and accounting policies to increase efficiency and accuracy.

Required Qualifications

5+ years of professional accounting experience.
Bachelor's degree, preferably in business or finance.
Expert-level, hands-on proficiency in QuickBooks Desktop and Excel.
Familiarity with other bookkeeping platforms (e.g., Sage, Xero) is a plus, but not required.
Strong grounding in double-entry accounting, with fluency with income statements and balance sheets.
