Company Overview
Space Cadets is a growing managed IT service provider in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. We deliver a wider range of solutions than most MSPs — managed IT, networking, cybersecurity, and a low-voltage and audio/visual practice that few of our competitors can match. We are also evaluating AI and automation services for our clients. Our commitment to honest guidance and quality execution is what sets us apart.
Our Core Values
Our core values ensure we are always doing the right thing for Space Cadets as well as our clients:
· Honest Communication & Listening: We provide honest guidance and are transparent about our pricing, ensuring we address client needs, challenges, and questions.
· Challenging Collaboration: We execute as one team, including our customers, striving for improvement and soliciting honest perspectives.
· Constant Curiosity: Asking questions is at the core of our growth — when we don't know something, we say so, then go figure it out.
· Applied Learning: Knowledge in application is how we grow and improve — what we learn on one job shows up in how we run the next.
· Intelligent Analysis: We look before we leap — evaluate the options, understand the trade-offs, and recommend what actually makes sense.
· Ethics & Integrity: We are honest brokers, focusing on solutions that position clients for success.
· Wit & Joy: We make the work environment vibrant and enjoyable.
Position Description
We are looking for a senior field engineer to lead the execution of our low-voltage, AV, and network projects. You will run jobs on-site from kickoff to closeout, coordinate technicians and subcontractor crews, and be the person we trust to deliver.
Between field days, you are the primary technical resource for our managed services clients — tickets come to you directly and you own them through resolution, alongside the back-office work that keeps projects moving. This is a hands-on role for someone who wants ownership of the whole picture rather than a narrow lane.
This is the role that lets our team scale beyond a single set of hands, and it comes with real ownership and room to grow as we build out the field organization.
This is not an entry-level or early-career role — if you don't have at least 5 years of hands-on field/IT work including 3+ in an MSP environment, this isn't the right fit yet.
Responsibilities
Project Execution: Own on-site execution of designed projects — scheduling, materials and staging, sequencing, and quality control from kickoff to closeout.
Site Leadership: Coordinate field technicians (including 1099/on-call techs) and subcontractor crews (e.g., structured-cabling partners) on the job site — sequencing their work and keeping quality consistent.
Help Desk & Remote Support: Act as the primary technical resource on our managed services queue between field days — take tickets directly, troubleshoot and resolve remotely across Windows and macOS, work the queue in HaloPSA, and support end users professionally and thoroughly.
Audio / Visual: Install and configure Sonos audio, conferencing/AV systems, displays, and high-end TVs (LG, Samsung).
Networking: Deploy and configure UniFi (our standard) and Cisco Meraki (higher-end) — routers, firewalls, wireless access points, VLANs, DNS, and DHCP.
Security & Low-Voltage: Install and support security cameras (UniFi Protect, Verkada, and similar), door access control systems, and structured cabling.
Back-Office Technical: Pre-stage and configure equipment, perform Microsoft 365 / Entra / Intune administration, and document thoroughly in HaloPSA.
Client Interaction: Represent Space Cadets professionally on-site, and report project status, risks, and change-order needs back to the owner.
Practical AI in Day-to-Day Operations
We use AI and automation in our own day-to-day operations — documentation, knowledge management, and service delivery. A small operation is a good place to learn the practical application of these tools: you see how they actually get used on real work, and you have room to put them to use yourself.
A Note on the Field Work
When there's on-site work, it's physical. You'll work in drop-tile ceilings, attics, and crawl spaces. You'll spend time on ladders and occasionally work on rooftops. You'll drill through walls, pull cable through tight spaces, and mount equipment overhead. You'll lift and carry equipment up to 50 lbs. If that sounds like a good day at work to you, keep reading.
Minimum Qualifications
· At least 5 years in field/low-voltage and IT work, including at least 3 years in a managed service provider (MSP) or similar technology-services environment.
· Demonstrated experience running installations on-site and coordinating technicians and subcontractor crews.
· Hands-on depth across audio/visual, networking, and low-voltage/security installation.
· Proven help desk or end-user support capability — comfortable owning tickets end to end, not just project work.
· Proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Entra/Azure AD, Intune, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive).
· Strong networking fundamentals — configuring routers, firewalls, wireless access points, VLANs, DNS, and DHCP.
· Experience providing technical support across both Windows and macOS environments.
· Valid driver's license and your own reliable vehicle — you'll drive to client sites across the Bay Area (mileage reimbursed for job-site travel).
· Excellent communication, organization, and troubleshooting skills; takes ownership of assigned work and operates proactively.
We don't expect deep mastery of every item above — if you're strong across most of these and ready to grow into the rest, apply.
Preferred Certifications & Experience
· CompTIA Network+ and/or Security+ certification.
· Manufacturer certifications such as Ubiquiti/UniFi (any UniFi certification track), Sonos, Crestron or Control4, and Verkada, OpenPath or Avigilon (or similar camera and access control platforms).
· BICSI Installer or Technician certification (or working toward one).
· OSHA 10 or equivalent jobsite safety training (a plus, not required).
· Low-voltage license or licensed contractor experience.
· Familiarity with NinjaRMM (or similar RMM), HaloPSA (or similar PSA), and SentinelOne (or similar EDR/XDR).
· Knowledge of ITIL principles and PSA-based ticketing and documentation.
· Google Workspace administration experience.
Compensation
· Competitive annual salary, depending on experience and skillset.
· Full-time, W-2 employee position.
· Mileage reimbursement for travel to and from job and vendor sites.
· Company-provided laptop, software licenses, and field tools.
· We'll fund manufacturer certifications relevant to your work — UniFi, Verkada, Crestron/Control4, and similar.
What to Expect
· A mix of on-site field work across the Bay Area and remote support between field days — the balance shifts with project load.
· Occasional advance-noticed off-hours or out-of-town work for client onboardings.
· Participation in an on-call rotation.
· A wide range of project types — most MSPs don't touch the low-voltage and AV work we do.
Why Join Space Cadets
· Real project ownership — kickoff to closeout — plus the trust to run our support queue as the senior technical voice, not a ticket-closing seat on someone else's team.
· Unusually broad exposure — managed IT, networking, security, AV, low-voltage, and emerging AI/automation work.
· Direct access to the founder. You'll learn faster here than buried in a large org.
· As the field org grows past one lead, you're the person whose fingerprints are on how it's built — how jobs get run, how techs get onboarded, what "done right" looks like here. That's not available at a 200-person MSP.
· We take pride in clean cable management, labeled runs, documented configurations, and leaving client sites better than we found them. If you care about doing the job right — not just getting it done — you'll fit in.
How to Apply
Send your resume and a short cover letter to [email protected] telling us why you're the right person to lead our project execution.
Tell us:
1. What's the most complex installation you've personally led from kickoff to closeout?
2. Tell us about a job you ran where you had a sub crew or another tech working alongside you.
3. What's your availability to start?
4. This role splits between running installs and working our support queue day to day, and the mix shifts week to week. Tell us about a time you kept a ticket queue and project work moving at the same time — what did that week actually look like?
Optional, but we'd genuinely like to see it: attach a few photos of work you've done — a rack you built, a cable run you dressed, a finished install you're happy with. Phone photos are fine; nothing polished required. Please make sure anything you send doesn't identify a client or expose their network details.
No generic cover letters needed. Just be real.
Note: This role requires signing an employment agreement that includes confidentiality terms. You'll have direct access to client networks, systems, and facilities.
