Overview
We are seeking an experienced, dependable, and customer-focused Pawn Loan Clerk / Firearms Sales Associate to join our team in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Prior experience in firearms sales or the pawn industry is required for this position.
This is not a general retail position. Our employees work with pawn loans, firearms, jewelry, tools, electronics, collectibles, and other merchandise while handling cash and valuable property and maintaining accurate records.
The successful candidate must be comfortable working directly with customers, evaluating merchandise, negotiating purchases and pawn loans, handling firearms safely, completing regulated firearm transactions, and maintaining accurate records.
Because our business involves both pawn transactions and federally regulated firearm sales, we place a high value on integrity, attention to detail, sound judgment, and accuracy.
We are looking for someone who can provide excellent customer service while also understanding that policies, procedures, record keeping, and firearm compliance must be followed carefully every time.
Primary Responsibilities
Pawn Loans and Merchandise
- Assist customers with pawn loans, loan redemptions, renewals, purchases, and merchandise sales.
- Evaluate items offered for pawn or sale and determine appropriate loan or purchase values.
- Negotiate professionally with customers when purchasing merchandise or making pawn loans.
- Research merchandise and current resale values when necessary.
- Accurately enter pawn loans, purchases, sales, customer information, and merchandise information into the store's computer system.
- Properly identify and document merchandise, including serial numbers and other identifying information.
- Maintain accurate records of pawned and purchased merchandise.
- Price, tag, clean, organize, and display merchandise for sale.
- Assist customers with questions about merchandise and help them select appropriate products.
- Monitor inventory and help maintain an organized sales floor and storage areas.
Firearms Sales and Compliance
- Assist customers with the purchase of firearms, ammunition, firearm accessories, and related products.
- Discuss firearm features, operation, intended use, and product differences with customers in a knowledgeable and professional manner.
- Demonstrate proper and safe firearm handling at all times.
- Inspect firearms and verify model, caliber, serial number, and other required information.
- Accurately complete firearm transactions in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and company policies.
- Assist customers with the completion of ATF Form 4473 and carefully review forms for accuracy and completeness.
- Follow required background-check procedures and company procedures for firearm transfers.
- Maintain accurate firearm acquisition, disposition, sales, transfer, and inventory records as required.
- Follow all company procedures regarding denied, delayed, cancelled, and completed firearm transactions.
- Follow all firearm safety, security, storage, and loss-prevention procedures.
Customer Service and Store Operations
- Greet customers and provide professional, courteous service.
- Answer telephone inquiries and assist customers with questions about merchandise, pawn loans, firearms, and store policies.
- Operate the point-of-sale system and process cash, credit-card, and other authorized transactions.
- Maintain an accurate cash drawer.
- Help open and close the store as assigned.
- Maintain a clean, organized, professional, and secure work environment.
- Assist with inventory counts and merchandise verification.
- Follow company security and loss-prevention procedures.
- Work cooperatively with other employees and management.
- Perform other normal pawn shop and retail duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must have previous experience in at least one of the following areas:
- Firearms sales, firearm retail, or an FFL-related business; OR
- Pawn shop or pawn loan experience.
In addition, applicants must:
- Have a working knowledge of firearms and safe firearm handling.
- Be comfortable handling handguns, rifles, and shotguns.
- Have strong attention to detail and the ability to complete paperwork accurately.
- Understand the importance of compliance when conducting firearm transactions.
- Be comfortable working with computers, point-of-sale systems, and electronic record keeping.
- Have good verbal communication and customer-service skills.
- Be able to deal professionally with a wide variety of customers.
- Be dependable and punctual.
- Be honest and trustworthy.
- Have good judgment and be able to follow established policies and procedures.
- Be comfortable handling cash and valuable merchandise.
- Be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Be willing to learn additional merchandise categories and methods for determining resale value.
- Be legally eligible to perform duties involving the handling and sale of firearms.
- Successfully complete any background screening required by the company.
Preferred Experience
Additional consideration will be given to candidates with experience in:
- ATF Form 4473 processing.
- Firearm background-check procedures.
- FFL record keeping and compliance.
- Buying, selling, or appraising firearms.
- Pawn loan writing and merchandise evaluation.
- Jewelry, gold, silver, coins, tools, electronics, musical instruments, or other commonly pawned merchandise.
- Retail sales and commission-based sales.
- Cash handling and point-of-sale systems.

The right candidate will be honest, dependable, knowledgeable, detail-oriented, and comfortable dealing with the public.
This position requires more than simply making sales. Employees regularly make decisions involving pawn values, merchandise purchases, firearms, customer identification, cash, and regulated transactions.
We need someone who understands that small details matter.
A successful employee should be able to provide friendly customer service while still following company policies and compliance procedures consistently. We are looking for someone who can exercise good judgment, recognize when something does not look right, and ask management for assistance rather than guessing when dealing with a compliance issue.
Schedule
- Part-time and full-time positions are available.
- Full-time schedules are generally 32–40 hours per week.
- Flexible scheduling is available.
- Applicants should be available to work during normal retail business hours and scheduled weekends as needed.
Compensation
Up to $18.00 per hour, depending on experience, plus commission.
Compensation will be based on the applicant's experience, firearm knowledge, pawn experience, and ability to perform the responsibilities of the position.
