Accounting Manager – Healthcare Controller-Level Finance (Portland, ME)

Full-Time | $110,000 – $150,000

Position Overview

The Accounting Manager serves as the organization’s senior accounting leader with Controller-level responsibility, overseeing the integrity of financial reporting, accounting operations, internal controls, and regulatory compliance.

This role owns the full accounting cycle, including month-end close, financial reporting, budgeting support, and audit coordination, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with GAAP and applicable healthcare regulations.

The position reports directly to the CEO and serves as the primary finance liaison to the Board of Directors and Finance Committee. This is a highly visible leadership role in a regulated healthcare environment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Lead all accounting operations and financial reporting in partnership with the CEO
Oversee Accounts Payable, Payroll, Accounts Receivable, and Billing functions
Own the month-end, quarterly, and annual close process, ensuring timely and accurate financial statements
Prepare monthly financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow) by the 10th of each month
Lead operating and capital budgeting processes, including variance analysis and presentation to leadership
Ensure accuracy of general ledger, reconciliations, fixed assets, and financial reporting integrity
Maintain strong internal controls, accounting policies, and GAAP compliance
Serve as primary liaison to external auditors and lead annual audit coordination
Present financial results to the CEO, Board of Directors, and Finance Committee
Monitor cash flow, investments, debt covenants, and insurance reporting
Ensure compliance with Medicare, Medicaid (MaineCare), Form 990, and cost reporting requirements
Oversee accounts receivable performance, including delinquency and allowance analysis
Supervise, develop, and evaluate accounting staff across AP, AR, payroll, and billing
Prepare financial reporting packages for executive leadership and the Board

Supervisory Responsibility

Payroll
Accounts Payable
Billing / Accounts Receivable

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
5–10+ years of progressive accounting experience in healthcare, long-term care, or nonprofit environments
Controller-level, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager experience strongly preferred
Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
Demonstrated experience leading month-end close and audit processes
Proven supervisory experience over accounting teams (AP, AR, payroll)
Strong executive communication skills with ability to present to Boards and senior leadership
Advanced Excel skills and ERP system experience preferred
Familiarity with Medicare and Medicaid (MaineCare) reporting strongly preferred
