Working here has become increasingly frustrating due to a lack of consistent leadership, poor communication, and a top-down management style that feels punitive rather than supportive. Upper management often steps in from outside the restaurant with an overbearing focus on minor details, but fails to provide the foundational tools or guidance needed for long-term success. Expectations are high, yet there’s been no clear communication, training, or structure to align the team with those expectations. Instead of fostering growth, management leans heavily into disciplinary action without offering meaningful mentorship or direction.

Morale has dropped significantly, especially as veteran team members are being pushed out or given fewer hours under vague accusations of not being “team players.” Meanwhile, issues like inconsistent tip-outs, lack of education around food and beverage offerings, and minimal pre-shift communication remain unresolved. Despite having a few truly standout leaders who are present, kind, and hard-working, much of the managerial staff lacks the initiative, approachability, or professionalism to lead by example.

There is a clear disconnect between the values corporate seems to promote and the way employees are treated on the ground. Enthusiasm that once existed has been replaced with burnout and frustration. It’s hard to take pride in a company that doesn’t appear to value its employees beyond their profitability. With genuine support, transparency, and effort to rebuild trust, this restaurant could be something special again — but right now, it feels like a neglected team being held to standards we were never given the tools to meet.

This company loves to preach about growth and opportunity, but those values have never materialized within our restaurant. Instead of investing in their people, they quietly cut hours, push staff out, and create conditions that make it impossible for long-time employees to stay. There’s no real effort to nurture talent or guide individuals toward success — just a cold calculation of labor costs and performance metrics. It’s disheartening to watch good, loyal workers have their livelihoods chipped away without a second thought.

Management treats employees less like people and more like numbers on a spreadsheet. There’s no empathy, no accountability, and certainly no follow-through on their promises of professional development. The result is high turnover, low morale, and a growing sense that we are all disposable. If this company truly cared about growth, they’d start by treating their staff like humans — not liabilities.

For all their talk about valuing guests and delivering high-quality hospitality, this company consistently and blatantly dishonors the very principles they claim to stand for. The guest experience is not a priority — it’s a PR line. Week after week, the restaurant is overbooked well beyond its capacity, creating a stressful, overcrowded environment that ruins the experience for so many people.

Reservation times mean nothing here. Customers regularly wait 30, 60, even 90 minutes past their scheduled reservation time. Managers will bring sangria to the foyer or comp food items for guests and act like that nullifies their incompetence. This company loves to espouse their value in quality guest experience, to the point where employees with be reprimanded for referring to "guests" as "customers". Yet in reality, these gestures become clear, arbitrary platitudes as guests  are treated as though their time and comfort are irrelevant as long as it means more potential for sales. The entire staff, from bussers to runners to hosts to servers and bartenders are left overwhelmed and unsupported, forced to absorb the fallout from poor management decisions while guests grow increasingly frustrated. It’s not just mismanagement — it’s a complete lack of respect for the customer experience.

And the company knows it. They’ve seen the reviews, heard the complaints, and still refuse to adjust, all while pretending to be a champion of hospitality. It's a hollow brand identity masking a culture that prioritizes optics over people — guests and staff alike.

Barcelona wine bar is probably the best place that was short-lived for me personally. I had been contacted about a couple of months before they opened by their director of operations at the time, the absolute sweetest, when I got there for the interview they were still finishing up their final touches on building the whole place. This is, to me, the first one job that got away and any chance I get at all working there I would jump on it. Managers are beyond caring, understanding, and as part of the opening staff, our training was actually quite challenging, which for me was very much a fun experience because I have been in the industry for 12 years now and at the time, I had been in the industry for 9 years and that’s still a good amount of time spent working in all different bar and restaurant environments and this place taught me things in the 2.5-3 months we were open for. My last day there was March 15th when Covid hit all the bars and restaurants and forced them to shut down. Mid-shift as we’re all confused as to why we’re not busier considering the advertising had brought in too many great and beautiful people and had been consistently steady and busy throughout our entire time there. People were there to train us from different Barcelona locations that were picked as the best out of their entire team and so you were guaranteed excellence in the servers and bartenders you were following, shadowing and being mentored by. Everyone was always respectful, only one person I can recall being not so much, he didn’t make it past second day training. It was high standards and high expectations and high levels of the protocol and professionalism as well as the genuine care and compassion that was given in training and expected in return after training is over. I’m so mad at Covid for taking this amazing opportunity away from me since I had to move out of Dallas and relocate, crazy how much can change. They did however have to get rid of so much stuff and gave it all to us staff, once Covid was a good two to three weeks in we all got a call to come by in groups assigned to us and collect a bunch of bags filled up with food made by our executive chef and his staff too! He’d been working with a lot of professional names that were quite familiar even to someone whose never worked in the kitchen or in a restaurant before, one of the best chefs I ever had the pleasure of learning from. They genuinely care for their staff and their customers and have morals and integrity as a company and as a team and managers knew how to pick their staff members not based on experience because you can train anyone who wants to be trained, but based on character. If you met the characteristics and qualities they looked for in a team member then you had a shot but would still have to go through training and the difficulty level I guess for some more than others had people quitting or being asked to kindly part ways. Barcelona you are the best team and company I’ve ever worked for especially being a corporate business, with a local-owned spirit and the quality that shows like Bar Rescue would be unable to find a flaw in. At least that’s when I worked there. I hope we cross paths again even though I’m now in bad and restaurant management I would still start all the way back again and work my way up if I could based on my experience there at the time.

Loved all the people that I worked with. An overall great group of people. However, pay was very poor and it was very difficult to get the hours desired due to an overstaff of workers in certain positions. As a busser, I did a majority of the work for the servers and the bartenders. I almost acted as a back for the servers and a bar back while I was only getting paid for the busser position. When I closed late nights, I would often bar back for the bartenders who never tipped out correctly due to a previous bartender years ago deciding not to tip bar backs at all. On busy nights when bartenders make $350+ each, they would typically only tip bar back 15-20 bucks a piece. They would not make close to that much if us bar backs didn't keep the bar completely stocked and cleaned for them at all times throughout the night. Also, some servers in the restaurant never tipped out correctly. The management was very....'cool'. They were all great people and everyone loved them. But they allowed employees to get away with too much. IE: being late, tipping out incorrectly, stealing drinks, stealing free drink tokens, not dressing appropriately, doing drugs. Also, all employees had to pay for parking every shift they had. It was typically 7-15 dollars a day/night for parking. You would figure that such a well established restaurant would at least pay for their employees parking. Also, employees that had been working there for a long time were more often likely to get away with stealing drinks and food, smoking marijuana during work outside, taking several cigarette breaks, showing up late, missing work unexcused, being very rude to newer employees, feeling entitled to everything. IE: someone was scheduled to close on a very busy Saturday night with one other person. Drank a lot during the work and left mid-shift, went outside and smoked a fat blunt, ate some medicinal mushrooms, drove off to meet someone to hook up with, crashed their car. This person returned to work the next day and everything was fine with management, only because it was a good looking, charismatic person who had been working there for several years. All while the other person that closed that night struggled and had a very bad/ stressful night. On the other hand, a newer employee that had only been working there for a few months was fired due to being 30 minutes late on 3 separate occasions on Mondays and Tuesdays, two of the slowest days at the restaurant. 

This is a great restaurant to eat at and visit for a good selection of wines. 

However, the inside of this company is VERY CORRUPT.

The upper management who manages all the managers of the Barcelona restaurants in Connecticut is a very good manager in my eyes though. The managers and employees at the Barcelona in West Hartford do a very good job hiding these things from upper management.

If there is one positive thing that I can say about Barcelona, it was that I always had my money right at the Inman Park location. High volume, super busy nights, etc. Of course that comes along with a high-stress, fast-paced environment, but I knew that would be a part of it. Amazing wine education when whoever was in charge that month felt it fit into their schedule. On that note, management changed frequently due to a mixture of expansion and firings.

Home/Work balance is extremely out of whack. Shifts could start as early as 10 am on the weekends and easily run past 2am on the same day. Some weekends breaks were not allowed as management would just continue seating your section through what you expected to be your break time. There are around two mandatory server meetings a month where you will be expected to come in a couple of hours before your shift / on your day off to learn about some random aspect of Barcelona Wine Bar culture. These classes range from genuinely informative wine tastings to hour long refreshers on how to properly set tables.

Communication from management to servers is extremely poor. You can expect to work a Saturday double with no break and your manager on duty will more than likely not come to talk to you or offer a reason why without being badgered. An opening server might be expected to close that night seemingly at random with no communication from management either. It is incredibly frustrating to watch servers who clocked in two or three hours after you get cut before you with no explanation and having to feel like the "bad guy" in order to get some sort of justification.

As I said in the title, this job is a perfect fit for someone who is willing to take a total lack of consistency or respect in stride. If you're the type of person who is willing to work 12+ hours a shift then you might be approached to be a shift leader at some point by your General Manager. However, this distinction is fleeting and is subject to revocation without warning with no explanation or communication from management. Brown nosing is encouraged and will be rewarded with back-pats and more responsibilities, but no additional compensation on the company's part.

First  I want to say that I was not even remotely familiar with Barcelona prior to getting an interview.  i was in need of a job and they were hiring.

The interview went well.  I was very clear with what I was seeking and it was made very clear to me that Barcelona fit the bill, to a t. I accepted a serving position and began training. 

It took me no time at all to realize that much of what was told me in the interview was not really how things worked, in reality.  Things like late nights and club like atmosphere.  I am not interested in working in a night club. Not interested in being at work at 4 in the morning. Was told that isn't what they were and that 4 a.m. would never happen.  It all happened first week. SO.. ok, that sucks... it's not the perfect fit I thought it would be. 

The work itself though, was just standard restaurant work. It was fine. Money, was hit or miss.  You gotta get through the testing to be a front server to make any money, there. Cool. Whatever. That is true in many restaurants.  

Often turns clubby after I'd say 9 or so. Restaurant stays open til local law says you must make last call.  3 am, at my location. There has to be a server on duty til 3 am. Often just sitting around for hours doing absolutely nothing.  No customers. No tips. Just hours of waiting so in an empty dining room.  Often getting one drunk table that just wants to chill... Again, cool. Just not for me. 

Company offers great education in wines, if you are wanting and willing to learn. Mandatory wine classes and lots of wine talk. It's a wine bar, after all. 

All I can say is know what you are getting in to, in terms of hours and expectations. If you are cool with the things that I have mentioned, Barcelona might be exactly what you are looking for.

I worked at BWB for a year and was fired because I questioned their tip pool and pay structure. No one was able to answer my simple question of "What is the breakdown of my pay? How is this being calculated?" and when I pressed further, and 5 different managers and HR reps couldn't answer me, I was fired. 

The coworkers that I had in my year there could not have been better people. I loved coming to work and for the longest time, it felt like a family environment. 3 months into my time there, my  most competent and best general manager left and the woman they placed into the GM position just could not handle it. Everything fell apart from there. The manager turnover I saw in 12 months at BWB was unlike anywhere I have worked in my 10 years in the industry. During my time there, I had (at least) 10 different managers (GM, AGM, and Service Managers). 

Barcelona is an incredibly high volume restaurant and they will work you into the ground. There was barely any work life balance, despite them preaching "people over profit", which was a direct quote from one of my (former) managers. 

Like I previously stated, the coworkers I had were amazing and I enjoyed coming to work. The wine and food knowledge I gained from my time at BWB has been incredibly useful in furthering my career in wine after being dismissed. The learning aspect was one of my favorite parts of working there. But had I not been fired for inquiring about my pay structure, I already had a foot out the door. 

Unfortunately, I would not recommend anyone to work here.

At Barcelona Wine Bar we all work as a team. It was the first restaurant where I have worked that uses a "front/back" serving system. At times I saw the value in it and understood why it is used and then other times I found it a bit useless and felt the restaurant was overstaffed. This is a very busy restaurant so the hours were very long as they do not close until very late in the evening. Some days stamina at 1 a.m. was hard to maintain. I did learn a lot about food and wine and hospitality. I do believe Barcelona has one of the best serving staffs in all of Atlanta. The management expects a lot out off its employees. Everything from uniform, obeying steps of service and keeping the restaurant clean and welcoming is required to be on point. I wanted to move up with this company but since I have worked here the management has not been consistent. Constantly changing GMs, and AGMs coming and going doesn't provide the structure that a serving staff needs. We see this as an unstable future for ourselves and therefore some people who were well pass the serving stage had to move on from the company to better opportunities. This is a wonderful company with a great motto but the work/life balance isn't even enough for people with families or those who want them.

First of all this location (Denver) is currently the busiest in the company so every day is intense. FOH employees start as back servers and the training/testing process to advance is rigorous and sometimes even a little ridiculous. There’s a high turnover rate, you really have to thrive in chaos to make it, but the company culture is very defined and full of passion for what they do. Management is like anywhere- some are amazing and know every answer, others are insufferable and you wonder who thought it was a good idea to promote/hire them. Pay is great for a tip pool and it’s consistent. If you really want to know about wine this is the spot to learn, they’ll even reimburse your somm test fee (with a few strings attached of course). This is a love/hate kinda place.

A typical day could be anywhere from fun to arduous starting with teammates that may or may not be there, causing extra strain on those that show up.  I feel like I learned that profits over people is their primary goal.  The company learned to say the right things but failed to support its staff meaningfully. However, the employees aren't any better, a nest of individuals who are in constant need of a mental health day except for the most lucrative shifts and once they've worked their shift they aren't willing to put in the work to do anything other than the minimum before leaving the rest of the work to be done by a select few.  The hardest part is dealing with a restaurant culture that identifies as a party first but fails to remember that it needs to order food to satisfy its guests because it is a restaurant. The most enjoyable part is the excitement that is made when you buy a guest a trifle to make up for the fact that it is the company's policy that they wait an extra 45 minutes for their reservation. 

The job is fairly easy, if you work well under pressure, you don't get flustered easily,you enjoy being in the kitchen and you have a passion for cooking. HOWEVER the management sucks! I had a lot of personal issues that I've stated before hire and was assured this was a family oriented environment and I have nothing to worry about. Don't get me wrong there has been some success stories I've heard from coworkers in there about the company but it was definitely some bullll behind it and to get there. As soon as I had family problems stuff hit the fan. I got treated as if I was an idiot I didn't feel respected and quite frankly it was a ..... show everyday. Working on the line was no problem to me but it was how I was getting talked to and treated that was the issue to me. So having said that if you're 10000% dedicated to the culinary world this is the job for you.
