Working with BHD has been a highly negative experience, primarily due to the toxic and dysfunctional management. The leadership team frequently engages in gaslighting, manipulating situations, and downplaying legitimate concerns. This leaves employees feeling frustrated, disempowered, and constantly questioning their own judgment.

Micromanagement is another persistent issue, with leadership closely monitoring even the smallest tasks. This stifles autonomy and creativity, making it difficult for employees to take ownership of their work. To make matters worse, feedback from subordinates is routinely ignored. Management is unwilling to listen or act on suggestions for improvement, creating a stagnant and demoralizing environment where growth feels impossible.

Title inflation is rampant, especially at the upper management level. Fancy job titles are handed out to justify substantial raises among the leadership, while the rest of the staff remains stuck in low-wage positions with little opportunity for advancement. The pay structure is deeply unfair and lacks any kind of standardized system. Wage increases are arbitrary and often based on favoritism—if management likes you, you’ll receive a bigger raise, regardless of your performance. Meanwhile, hard-working and competent employees are frequently overlooked. The raises given to non-management staff are meager, with most of the financial benefits going directly to upper management, leaving the rest of the workforce feeling undervalued and underpaid.

The task distribution is equally unbalanced. Competent employees are routinely burdened with extra work, while lazy or incompetent staff are allowed to get away with doing the bare minimum. Management’s blatant favoritism enables some employees to shirk responsibility, yet they still receive equal or even better treatment than those who are actually carrying the team's workload. This unfair system punishes hard work and rewards incompetence.

Management claims to handle issues objectively, focusing on facts rather than individuals, but this is often just a way to avoid holding people accountable—especially their favorite employees. In reality, they cover for those they like, allowing problems to persist without any meaningful consequences.

If you're considering joining this department, be aware that it’s a place where hard work is exploited, while favoritism and incompetence are rewarded. The environment is toxic, the compensation is unfair, and management does nothing to support or recognize the employees who truly care about their work. I strongly advise looking elsewhere if you value fairness, recognition, and a healthy work culture.

The high turnover rate is a glaring red flag—proceed with caution!

First and foremost you should know about the probation period: 

They have a 3 month probation period but then they often will extend it for little reason. I only found out months after working there that when you are in your probation period, national paid holidays are unpaid. So you lose 8 hours of pay and you have no option otherwise. 

I'm guessing that is why they often extend probation periods to avoid paying out those hours. It is the same with your paid time off or sick leave, you cannot access them until after you pass probation. If you don't pass probation, the hours you accrued disappear and you are not reimbursed for them. 

They claim to care about work-life balance and that you should take care of yourself. But it is just the same story buried deeper-- the only way they are actually happy is if you are just healthy and never need a sick day. if you do get sick they feel compelled to say it is okay to rest, but it DOES count against you later despite reassurances to the otherwise.

The training here is very inconsistent, even within small departments each employee is told/taught something different. Their management structure is basically nonexistent. There is no real way to move forward unless you kiss the right butts and are aware of the right opportunities, they don't have a ladder. 

The only consistent training is the relias training everyone goes through at the start, but the relias training doesn't actually reflect the company culture so do not be mislead by that.

The work culture is intense and the volume of work is high, honestly it was fun to be so productive. But it was unrewarding. There is lack of a sense of meaning, progress or appreciation after completing your work or turning things in. 

They give you criticism but do not acknowledge when you have worked on what they criticized you for, instead you are just presented with a new criticism. 

It is your same company that wants to exploit you just wrapped up even more in nice words and pretty sentiments. I fell for it so I'm leaving this review so others will not. 

Do not trust people and guarantee your place from the start. Everyone speaks and acts very kindly but take some time to assess if they actually are. Do not think people are looking out for you even if they say they are, because they are not. 

If you can, I would suggest avoiding entirely. Their mission and their work does help the community but as an employee everyone looks stressed, overworked and unsure about their place. 

Management will watch you through cameras to micromanage you. Training is inconsistent and you’ll have to practically beg for it. Else you’d be blamed for making mistakes on things you were never taught and given a poor performance review. Performance reviews are also not consistent and based on whether the manager likes you or not. You will be punished for asking questions and trying to do your job well. You will be expected to take on an immense load of work for minimum wage pay while also being berrated on small mistakes throughout the day. Managers will gossip about you behind your back with other employees. Managers will try to catch you in a mistake. There is NO communication about any schedule or workplace changes. Employees are expected to fix issues that come up that are supposed to be management’s job. There is no positivity, encouragement, or mature open dialogue happening. There is a culture of untrustworthiness.

Every providers work differently. You have to understand how they want their way of work individually. 

Training is terrible and unorganized. Everyone trained differently and there is no exactly how things needed to be done.
 
No job security nor advancement. Manager lied to us stating 3 months probation and even in paper we signed stated 3 months probation but instead 1 year probation. If ask for advancement for another job position in the company manager will find excuses to fire you immediately.

Co-workers were very friendly.

Beware of colleagues in this company. They are willing to put others under the bus if it means looking out for themselves. Don’t make friends at all in this company. They may seem genuine and humble, but they aren’t your friends. Someone is potentially watching and will snitch. Working here is okay, but not fully rewarding. Was given a performance review after a year and was told after every effort I made, that my performance was inadequate. Expect favoritism within this organization. The pay rate is okay but you can definitely do better else where. Just like the other reviewer emphasized, “just don’t” and you will save yourself from trouble. If you applied and get hired, just be warned from everything I have stated. 

The organizational culture is terrible!  Beside the benign relationships with co-workers, the management is constantly and consistently micro-managing!  I had to literally update my Outlook Calendar by the minute throughout the week!

I was never given a list of duties and responsibilities either.  And most of my colleagues at the time had their probation period extended for no apparent reason.  Personally, the management provided a very poor job performance review, despite the fact that all of my clients had something positive to say, and two of them even called the CEO and left messages.

Extremely stressful working environment, please avoid.

I worked here summer 2013 and it was a nice environment. I learn to be patient with auction's guest people and treat them nicely no matter what is the conditions and work always with a smile. I enjoyed working with my co-workers because I talked to them constantly and interacted with one another. I was in-charge of calling the guest that were invited to the auction that summer as well as receiving and organizing items being auction. Honestly I do not think that there was any hard part while doing this job. I enjoyed everything that that had to do with this job because it was enjoyable and interesting.

Coming to Chinatown Service Center, I was pretty new with how a lot of the operational stuff worked at a non- profit. I can say that during my time here I have continuously learned a lot each and every day I come into work.  I have had the opportunity and luck to have  both a very instrumental supervisor and program director.  I see great potential, tragically it is the non- unifying culture that makes this place lack advancement.

The atmosphere here is nice and polite staff members while their management is average at best. As a non-profit company, they do their job, but there are some HR people who do not know how to manage their employees and it can get frustrating at times. You might enjoy working here for the first 6 months, but it can get ugly after that if you're under corrupt higher-ups
