Honest Review of My Experience on Night Shift

I worked night shift at this facility and, while I had a great experience with the clients, I cannot recommend this workplace due to the overall work culture. The night shift staff had significant issues with professionalism, particularly regarding noise levels and respect for patient care. Despite requests to be mindful, many employees were consistently loud on the floor, disrupting clients sleep without concern.

There were also ongoing authority struggles between nurses and techs, with frequent power dynamics creating a tense environment. Instead of communicating, techs often escalated situations among themselves, making it difficult to resolve issues fairly. When I brought concerns to upper management, I found that the Director of Nursing (DON)—who was supportive of me , was still limited by the influence of social workers, who had the final say in many medical decisions. This created unnecessary friction and made it difficult to advocate for proper patient care without being questioned or undermined.

The workplace culture also prioritized ego over teamwork. Many staff members were more focused on avoiding perceived disrespect or manipulation, yet their behavior often came across as disrespectful and manipulative in return. Attempts to address legitimate concerns, even at the corporate level, were frequently dismissed or turned against me, leaving me as one voice against a tight-knit clique of coworkers who protected one another.

Additionally, holiday pay is not time and a half, and the lack of overtime opportunities made it difficult to meet financial expectations. As a new grad, I put in long hours including holidays yet what little I saved did not match my efforts.

If you are someone who values a structured, professional, and patient-centered environment, I would not recommend this location. If you have concerns about maintaining a quiet and respectful atmosphere for patient care, be prepared for pushback from staff who prioritize their own comfort over the needs of the clients.

I did learn how to paper chart, i learned protocols based on their needs. And was exposed to various situations with walk ins mental health crisis’ over dose ETOH toxicities etc etc 

There was little to no training on day to day functions. After a few months, I still did not know what was expected of me. I learned very little to nothing new, as we saw next to no clientele, and when we did, it was a chaotic mess from start to finish. Management on the higher levels was apathetic, and was ignorant on what our facility did and how it functioned. There was no accountability across the board, and no consequences for violating codes or policies. Many clients were served very poorly in all avenues. 
The culture was pathetic, and most team meetings were a total joke. Some even until late at night where what was enjoyed at lunch was more important than roundings and debriefings. There were no efforts made to keep staff who resigned, and the mentions of high turnover rate are true. Nor was there any encouragement to do the job well or even adequately. Those who asked too many important questions were actively ignored by management, even if it was beneficial to the team.
In terms of promotion, unless you have a masters degree, kiss that goodbye for the most part. The best one I received was my self-imposed resignation.
The hardest part of the job was a tie between the long hours caused by an unpredictable workload thanks to poor management and direction, the insufferable co-workers who would leave most of the work unfinished or unprofessionally completed, and the lack of support from higher level management. 
The best part was the few co-workers in different roles who shared these concerns and complaints.
This is completely ignoring the laughable compensation package, and the PTO policy around holidays where corporate takes your PTO on holidays regardless of consent or preference. Furthermore, the payroll was done in such a way where you would have a ridiculous amount of overtime; leading to an absurd amount of taxes deducted because corporate would not review the process. 

I could keep droning, but spare your time and livelihood and do not work for this company at the moment. Corruption and favoritism run rampant, with no sign of letting up soon.
In short, seek other companies. Frontier is the wild west with no regard for client or employee health. 

I worked for Frontier Health for 8 months before I was forced to resign due to the pandemic. I was the CNA/PA Specialist at their Bristol site. Although I only made $10 an hour as an 11 year veteran CNA, I loved my job there until Covid-19 came along, and they were doing phone visits only for a few weeks and then foolishly decided to start seeing clients in person again while Covid cases are continually skyrocketing in this area. They demanded that I continue conducting vital signs on clients (which are completely unnecessary for psych visits anyway) without proper protection when I have underlying health issues and was the only employee there who did. I demanded proper PPE and they gave me one gown which ripped after day one, a face shield and a KN95 mask which is not the N95 I asked for. Then they forced me to read and acknowledge a training guide on how to wear an N95 when that wasn’t what I received. I was told that was the only PPE I would get. I inquired about working remotely from home during the pandemic since my main job was prior authorizations, and I could have easily worked from home as everything I did was via fax/phone/computer. They told me that was impossible while allowing other employees to work from home. On Wednesday July 22nd I informed the nurse that I no longer felt comfortable conducting vital signs with my underlying conditions, and also that I felt extremely uncomfortable with the fact that most other employees there were treating social distancing and mask protocols like a joke and weren’t wearing them. She then told me that vital signs were my job and that it’s everyones choice if they want to wear a mask or not. I was also told not to tell anyone about the fact that I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. I told one other employee and my boss reprimanded me. And this is literally a mental health facility. 

This company has a wide variety of positions within the company that entail a lot of different job aspects and job obligations. You can be assured that a typical day at work for this company will include a lot of paperwork; so much paperwork in fact that it can become overwhelming. Sometimes you can get lucky and  have amazing co-workers  that will give you a  hand, but other times you might find yourself lost up the creek without a paddle. Yes, its safe to say that training is limited due to the company high turnover rate. Therefore, you will find yourself with a full case load before you even know what an ISN note is supposed to look like to appease insurance companies. A typical work day depends on your assigned case load, but usually you will be expected to have a minimum of four visits to your assigned case load daily; which have to be scheduled to appease your client and their family. The more visits you do the happier the company will be with you and the more paperwork you will have to complete within 24 hours of each visit. Therefore, if you are good with making your own schedules and and micro managing yourself this is the position for you. 

Moreover, what you learn while employed in this job depends. You can be assured that you will learn all sorts of things; like mental health issues, substance abuse issues, resources in the area,  family and group counseling, youth issues, aftercare, and many other things; more importantly you will learn about people's lives and their struggles. Hardest part of the job will be separating one from individuals struggles, and being overwhelmed with company paperwork. The most enjoyable part of the job was helping people and hearing their stories. 

Finally, I recommend this company if you are in need of experience and you would like to help others.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The clients. The pay is decent for the area. There are multiple positions to choose from. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The management. The list of duties for your position is listed when hired but, they add extra the longer you are there but do not compensate you for them. I was hired for a position, then asked to step up to another, they provided no training for this pilot program, they were unsure how it was going to work but still expected me to perform duties that included putting persons in my personal vehicle that had addictions and driving them to and from work. This was not a safe environment. There were no clear cut ways to carry out this pilot program and wasn’t thought through. They received the grants for it but just weren’t ready to roll things out.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The culture and environment depended on your position, as does many businesses. This is a client based program and some things are a little sketchy. There are really great people that do the right things but then there are those taking advantage of business practices. It’s also a very small town and it’s a who you know and who you are type of situation. Some things are let slide and some people are over corrected.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
In the position I carried out most of my co workers were fabulous. We worked very well together, and we even hung out together after work occasionally. Our manager was THE BEST but he moved and things went downhill quickly. Our program was shut down and we were dispersed to other programs, some new that wasn’t carried out effectively and most of us left off our own accord.

I love my position. Love it. I have great coworkers, a lax and supportive boss though they lose things constantly along with forgetting nearly everything; they also cannot handle problems themselves out of fear of not being liked. Other than that, my boss is extremely flexible, emotionally supportive to us and encourages us to take care of ourselves or our family first if something happens. It is the perfect place if you are in school for your masters because they are SO flexible.  My beef with my position is, I’ve had a 1%,1.5% and a 2% raise and that’s it. No one (besides upper mgmt or someone changed positions) gets a raise unless EVERYONE gets a raise I got my masters degree and applied for a therapist position which I got and only made $2,000 more dollars a year. I lost my mileage check so really, I don’t make much more than I did as a case manager. Insurance continues to go up, mileage is only 34 cents and we aren’t getting raises. Staff turnover is outrageous due to low fees and extremely high expectations for positions like case managers. Also, they’re renovating the corporate office, putting in automatic paper towel dispensers in all the 70 odd locations yet didn’t give the real workers a raise. Also, payroll continues to lose mileage checks and forget about placing an order, it will get lost.

As a residential tech, the job pretty much is what you make it. At a minimum, you will be distributing meds, writing notes, helping to prepare meals, coordinating appointments, and driving residents where they need to go. Other tasks are encouraged but not required (activity coordination, holiday party planning, yard work, cleaning, grocery shopping, skill teaching, etc.). 

This is a good place to work. It isn't perfect, but most of the "problems" are more related to systematic issues (low re-imbursement for services, inability to afford/maintain quality staff members, etc.) than with the company itself.  I have had many incredible supervisors at Frontier over the years who cared about my growth as an individual. On the other hand, I have experienced periods of time when there was no supervisor or support for months because no one wanted the responsibility at the pay. If you have a heart for serving others & some sort of formal education in mental health, this is a good gig. 

Working at Frontier Health has given me an opportunity to learn and grow in all different areas of office work and has given me skills that have greatly benefited me.  I have learned so much while working here and highly enjoy the work that I do and the meaning behind it.  Frontier Health is a great place to work if you are looking to dip your toe in the waters of customer service work or social work or therapy.  They require you to be cross trained on all positions which may sound intimidating but, in the end, it will help you with your job and give you so much knowledge.  I have grown plenty here and I have been very happy working here.  I love my coworkers and the people we work with and the work that we do.  My management actually listens to our concerns which is unusual in most workplaces.  They value the employees that work hard and actually listen to them.  Raises and bonuses are given out every so often and PTO is given out every pay period.  Frontier Health is a great place to learn and grow while also serving our community. The only con for me is that I wish the pay was better for the amount of work that we do.  It is hard to survive out here these days, but I wouldn't trade this job for the world!  Very rewarding.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
You have no adequate training, when you try asking for help and reach out to your higher up team leader or supervisor you become a burden and nothing changes to give you proper training. The other higher up department individuals email you with no respect or manners. They don’t care about you or the clients ONLY the “numbers” $$

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment and culture in this company is like a jungle or war zone. You’re a man on your own especially when freshly hired.  It’s stressful and very unhealthy for your own mental health. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Start your computer to clock in and have an email stating come see when you get in. You ask for assistance or training and they send you back to your office-mate to ask for help supervisor NEVER helped because she didn’t know 3/4’s of the time the job herself. You’re told one thing in orientation and it’s the total opposite when you get to your department/office.

I worked for Frontier Health for a little over a year. There is absolutely a mean girl culture. The only way to advance there is to bully people. There was one particular employee who could have easily filed a workplace harassment lawsuit, given that her personal coffee maker was filled with window cleaner. One employee in particular sets the tone for the rest of the mean girls. She puts up signs in the bathroom, takes away other employees air conditioning knobs so they cannot control their air conditioners, and has bull- sessions about every other employee. There was even a GROUP snap chat used to make fun of other employees. Again, it's as close to the movie, mean girls, as possible. Management needs to be fired for letting it go on for so long. They wonder why three case managers quit in the same month. They wonder why they can't keep employees. Fire those that are responsible for berating, belittling, and assaulting other employees when they don't get their way. Our manager told us in a staffing meeting at one point that we would never find better than Frontier Health. She was WRONG!
