Shake Shack

This is a part-time role (typically 25–30 hours per week). Full-time positions are only offered to shift managers and above. The company promotes from within, so you’ll need to work your way up—though this process can feel more political than merit-based.
Managers are frequently rotated between locations, so you're often adjusting to new leadership. Store-level standards vary widely, since some managers allow corner-cutting or make their own rules around food prep and cleanliness. If coworkers are inconsistent, it's often because management sets the tone.
The company emphasizes a motto of “standing for something good,” but in practice, this often only applies when it benefits the company. New hires start with slower shifts due to training paperwork, but once you’re on the floor, the pace picks up quickly.
Work Environment:
Be mindful of the location you apply to. Older, lower-performing stores can have more internal politics. You may get less desirable shifts (like frequent closings), and hours are often kept to around 5 per day to limit labor costs—this means fewer breaks and reduced staffing.
Area directors oversee specific locations and may apply policies differently. If you're placed under a strong, supportive director, it makes a big difference. If not, the experience may be challenging.
Shifts and Support:
Breaks are minimal—typically a 10-minute break with limited meal options. On longer shifts, staff are expected to manage high workloads with minimal support. It’s common for managers to be unavailable during busy periods, and some lack experience with effective scheduling or team coordination.
There are a few excellent managers, but burnout is common. Many employees seem unhappy, and stress often trickles down to team members. Professional boundaries are enforced—there’s a strict policy against team members and managers forming personal relationships, including on social media.
Concerns:
While there is an HR structure in place, concerns like harassment or unfair treatment aren’t always addressed thoroughly. The company’s internal response can feel dismissive. Since recent leadership changes, labor budgets have tightened, and cutting shifts is now common. You may be asked to cover multiple roles during understaffed shifts.
Schedules are staggered, so it’s not unusual to work alone for stretches. Expectations are high, but recognition is often limited to small tokens like coffee or snacks.
Summary:
The current culture can feel discouraging. Support and fairness depend heavily on the location and leadership. The best part of the job, for many, is simply clocking out.

A lot of workers there like to stand around, and managers like to bark orders and sit in the office, creating expectations that they are unable to even fulfill themselves. It's one of the worst corporations I've ever worked for, I do not recommend this company to anyone. There are many promises but no actions taken, resulting in a lot of loss of good employees and managers. There's a lot of corrupt management too and it causes people who care, to be overloaded and discouraged. A lot of talk about standards and caring for one another, but a whole lot of not living it out. Sometimes the manager just disappears too, obvious power abuse

The training is extensive and unengaging, just a bunch of over-explained, wordy modules you have to suffer through. The higher you move up, the more mundane, repetitive, mind-numbing content you have to absorb. It's pretty brainwashing almost.

You can voice your concerns but they will fall on deaf ears. Don't even try to seek a future here, it's a highly stressful environment, the work isn't too hard in my opinion, the actual cooking itself. But the lack of being set up for success, lack of teamwork, and toxic culture make the entire job miserable,  depressing, and harder than it should be. Leaving Shakeshack was probably the best thing I did for myself, I already contemplating quitting during my training. It was that bad. I gave it some time but it just kept getting worse.
There are a select few great people but even they have their limits. 

Their pay is not bad though, with weekly pay, and direct deposit, but your last paycheck will be a money network check, and it's difficult to find anyone who takes those checks. Customers can be pretty hostile at times, and delivery drivers are quite pushy. The whole place is a mess and needs a change of management, it's a crazy show working there.

As regular employees, we don't get free food, only managers, and some even abuse the amount of food they get. Trainers can get free food if they pay attention enough to help you get there that is.

And if it's a slow season, be prepared to have your hours severely cut. I overheard some of the managers talking about not wanting to hire minors anymore either.
Just find another spot to work at, this place is almost inhumane with how they skip so many breaks til the last minute, sometimes they send us home early due to labor being too high. The manager who makes the schedule does a bad job and doesn't consider others, on top of that they make out being sick to almost being punishable if you can't find someone to cover it, I've seen other workers getting written up for legit being sick.

Depending on where you work some locations will always be busy, others not soo much. The place I work at is busy mostly on Fridays, Saturdays, and some holidays. When kids are not in school(I.e. week breaks/summer) it will be busy almost daily until they go back to school(depending on the area).

Management in some places(I worked at 2 of them) are mixed. Some do care about progress and growth of their employees...others only care about themselves, and making themselves grow by appeasing their bosses.

I've worked for Shake Shack for over 2 years and still a crew person.  Early into my time working(when covid started), I was getting all the help and training I needed to progress. But never was able to complete them cause many things always had to be done first before going further in my training, mostly due to covid restrictions, policy changes, and such.

But after the year was over and I was at a new location(opening of new store, my current home store), I was always put on Kiosk(Cashier).  This would go on for months at a time...would never get to work a different position.

Would always ask when can I finish my training by doing my certifications.  The answer I got was that I had to start completely over.  Course I was a bit annoyed by it as all I needed to do was my certifications to become a trainer...but new location, new training...or so I thought.

I always thought workplaces promoted people based on experience and work progress, and Shake Shack was like that at first...til now nearly 2 years later, I figured out that its now based on Customer Service only...but honestly, I think its only strictly for me, no one else.

For 2 years, I've seen people come in, get trained within a few weeks to a few months, get promoted, then either quit or get transfered...in 2-6 months.  Not a single person more(1 other has worked as long as I have, and is now a MIT(Manager In Training)) in the location I am in has worked for the company for more than 2 years.

As for managers, I've seen about 10 different managers come and go.  Currently 2 managers are still working in the same location as I, but 1 is apparently being close to termination(from what I hear), and another is waiting for another store to open nearby.  So management is still in rotation currently...just slower than before.

Oh, as for work...don't expect full time hours unless you are a trainer or higher.  But not all trainers are getting full time hours either.  I applied for full time, and am only getting part time hours.  I've only worked a 7 hour shift twice...never seen an 8 hour shift yet, not for myself or any other worker. Only ones getting 8 hours are managers.

A day at work includes working many different stations. Sometimes it will be only four people in the kitchen with you working an entire side by yourself while your managers are in the office. Most days during the period between holidays are very slow at my location. Other locations i've heard are constantly busy. 
When you work here you have to learn every station but, over a period of time. They do expect you to have one station perfected in a month or you are supposed to be terminated or so i have heard. But most people are good at learning a station quickly, it's not difficult but it is a lot to take in.
At this location the workplace is toxic. We are supposed to be supportive and helpful of one another but most times you get an attitude and an unwillingness to help. People here act like teenagers(some are actually teens) but most are full grown adults with children and they act like they are still in high school even the managers with the exception of one manager.
Management here is terrible. A certain manager will treat specific team members better then others. If you are a certain type of person they will take advantage of you. Most of the time they will make fun of you or find some way or another. One manager is the most unprofessional manager there. In fact the entire management team is mostly disorganized. They all talk about communication is key but most often then not, they are not on the same page. The managers do things differently then what the head manager expects which results in team members getting in trouble when it isn't their fault. Its ridiculous.
The hardest part of the job isn't the guests it's dealing with lack of communication, constantly being made to do one thing then turn around in the middle stop what you are doing and do another because the manager is indecisive and loves to make your job difficult . (i'm not joking)
The job is enjoyable at first but after a few weeks but it's very demanding.

This was easily one of the most stressful jobs I’ve ever had.
Hours were extremely limited—I was only getting around 8 hours a week.
Any mistakes were taken way too seriously, even on your first day.
No real training was provided, but you were still expected to know everything.
Knowing the “4 Cs” and “5 As” was required before your performance could be reviewed.
Staff constantly warned me that the company doesn’t care about employees.
Direction from upper management was rude and unprofessional.
You were blamed even when a customer was in the wrong.
Leadership offered no real support and created a toxic environment.
All the pressure came with very little reward.
Nothing made me feel like I was valued as an employee.
Management often prioritized customer satisfaction over employee well-being.
S.taff turnover seemed high, which makes sense given the conditions.
Staff members were clearly overworked and underappreciated.
Overall, I felt more stressed than supported during my time there.
New hires were set up to fail instead of being helped to grow.
Your time and energy are better spent elsewhere.
Avoid this job if you want a healthy and respectful workplace.
Seriously, I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.
The expectations don’t match the pay or the treatment.
Even with tips, the job wasn’t worth the stress.
Very little communication and guidance was given.
A workplace should build you up, not tear you down.
Never again.
All in all, this job taught me exactly what to avoid in the future.
No support, no growth, and no respect.
Don’t waste your time.
Experience here was disappointing to say the least.
My advice: look somewhere else.
I stayed for one month, and that was already too long.
Lack of leadership ruined any potential this job had.
You deserve better



I've worked there for a few months and always do my hardest to get everything done and perfect. They appreciate my daily efforts and always try to have a good shift. Nobody can say I wasn't an excellent worker. We definitely have fun most days as well.

The problem is in the write-ups. Attendance is a killer at shake shack. The policy is a bit unreasonable in my opinion, Many people may not have the most reliable way to get in on time and there will always be days when things happen and you are delayed. Even as I started working there the trains started skipping my stop on and off for weeks because of maintenance. 

If you are 6 minutes late past clock in time it counts as a write up which I knew. What I didn't know was that write ups take an entire year to go away on the date they were given.
You are worked quite hard for the pay you are given but you could learn stations and move up. But it wont matter to most because of the write up policy.

If it were 6 months until a write up expires that would make it so much easier to deal with and they'd save some great experienced workers, things would be way more efficient and quicker to move along if we didn't have to keep training new hires constantly. For some people like myself I have never received a write up for any other infraction other than attendance.

They say shake shack cares about its employees, if so they should have a better policy for write ups that's more down to earth cause a full year to get 6 infractions is quite a long time. 


This is a good job for college students, a side job, or as a first job but DO NOT plan on staying there long term unless you want to become a general manager (there's no real security there though). The actual job isn't hard or stressful, if you have a good trainer you will be taught how to properly make burgers, fries, shakes and attend to your guest. It gets stressful when management starts hiring people just because they need more people aka hiring lazy people, people who show that they don't care about the job/helping their team members, and when your manager starts guilt tripping you for various reasons. It get's difficult once you see managers come and go as in general managers and assistant general managers leave/get fired. As times passed I've encountered managers sleeping with team members, managers "jokingly" telling their college employees to quit college to work there full time, and crude comments from them. If you choose to work at Shake Shack do not let any manager "bully" or persuade you into doing something you don't want to do. Do your job as best as you can, don't get caught up in work drama (the drama within this company is insane and I've worked at one location quit and went to another one and I seen the same drama going on just with different faces) and go home. They also treat pregnant employees TERRIBLE, I've witness 4 pregnant employees be over worked and not get frequent breaks as they are suppose to. It's insane, just get hired get promoted and go to the next job because the people at one does not care about anyone.The only plus is that you might meet some really cool people and make lasting friendships with them.

Throughout my experience at shake shack, I gained valuable insights from the hiring process to my final day. Unfortunately, the initial job advertisement proved to be misleading as it contained false information. The post stated that the team member position was a full-time job with a pay rate of $19 per hour. However, during the interview, I was informed that the position was actually part-time, with a pay rate of $17 per hour. Despite this discrepancy, I accepted the job due to my financial circumstances. 

The training provided by shake shack was enjoyable and comprehensive. They equipped us with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel at each station, enabling us to provide exceptional customer service. However, the main challenge I faced was the limited number of hours I was given. Additionally, the distance between my home and the workplace posed a significant inconvenience. As a result, the job did not prove to be a suitable fit for me.  

One aspect that left a negative impression on me was the differential treatment of employees by the general manager. From the moment the store opened, it was evident that she did not foster a welcoming environment. Whenever employees had questions, she appeared bothered and reluctant to provide assistance. It would have been beneficial if there had been more transparency throughout the hiring process, training, and overall treatment of employees. Given my experience, I would not recommend working at shake shack unless you are a recent high school graduate embarking on your journey into adulthood.

A typical shift at Shake Shack has at least one rush that can last about an hour or so but everyone works as a team which helps make the work go by smoothly and efficiently. Most Shake Shacks tend to have lines out the door and people willing to stand in them for an hour just to have the burgers but the Shack located within The Domain of Austin doesn't ever experience that. It will always be busy though. This is a great place if you're looking to grow within a company because there's so much room for advancement and promotions. There's even chance for travel because the company is trying to spread across the country and world wide and wants to send current employees out to train and recruit new employees. within this company I've learned more about better customer service and how much customers truly mean to a company. I've learned that working as a team is extremely important when getting tasks done and how a person's attitude can affect the work environment. This is the best job I've had because of my co-workers. Shake Shack is only interested in hiring people who are hard workers and people who can get along easily with others so I've never experienced any sort of drama at the workplace. The hardest part of my job would be during those rare occasions that we get a line out the door and it lasts for over an hour because there's no time for breaks or any sort of mishap.The most enjoyable part of  my job though is working with others because even though we are working it's also very easy to have fun with it.

   Overall, Shake Shack is a pretty good place to work. It is great to see a lot of young adults taking control of the stations & effectively communicating with one other to complete large volumes of orders at a go. The restaurant itself is maintained & kept clean throughout each day. The management is not always the best (depending on who is there that day), BUT one cannot complain much, for it is more thoughtful & tolerable compared to other companies & their management. 

   The problem that has been encountered by myself & other co-workers, come to find out, is that the managers will be hiring more people, but YET, do not get rid of the few bad apples there who barely respect anybody: behavior that rules against the 49/51% worker that the company boasts to possess. To elaborate, (and to end) here is an excerpt from the Insider on the Shake Shack company. 

"We look for people who are warm, friendly, motivated, caring, self-aware and intellectually curious team members, or what we call "51%'ers." We use the term "51%" to describe the emotional skills needed to thrive at the job and "49%" to describe the technical skills needed for the job."

Sadly, not all Shacks out there live up to such standard in regards to their employees. I have seen people leave because of it.
