Full Job Description

Community Action Opportunities is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented accountant to support our financial operations and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Reporting to the Director of Finance, an employee in this class is responsible for a variety of professional accounting and benefits administration duties using the Agency’s financial software. Key elements include but are not limited to accounts receivable, cash receipts, journal entries, audit preparations, and special projects. Tasks include maintaining and updating routine hardcopy and electronic accounting data, designing, generating, and analyzing a variety of financial-related management reports and spreadsheets, and quality control review. Also provides back-up support for payroll and accounts payable functions. Work requires teamwork skills, knowledge of and ability to support and implement agency policy and procedures. Work also requires considerable tact, diplomacy, and judgment. Work is often accomplished in teams. Work is evaluated through observation, discussion, auditing, monitoring and significant incidents that demonstrate job quality, quantity, timeliness, and results. During an annual performance appraisal, work is formally reviewed, and future goals are set.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Manage and track grant expenditures, ensuring compliance with specific donor restrictions and federal/state regulations.

Process vendor invoices, employee expense reports, and manage incoming donations and grant payments.

Assist in processing bi-weekly payroll and maintain related records.

Assist with the annual financial audit, prepare necessary schedules, and liaise with external auditors.

Collaborate with department leaders to monitor annual budgets.

· Comprehensive knowledge of accounting principles and practices.

· Thorough knowledge of accounting software applications and Microsoft Office applications.

· Working knowledge of laws, general statutes, rules, and regulations governing specific grants, human resource administration, and accounting.

· Skills to compile, organize, evaluate, and reconcile a variety of accounting, payroll, and employee records and reports.

· Skills to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

· Ability to, accurately, perform a variety of accounting and mathematical functions with reasonable speed.

· Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with vendors, other employees, and supervisors.

· Ability to respond quickly to internal customer and vendor inquiries.

· Ability to collaborate with individuals and as a responsible team member.

· Familiarity with public accounting standards and experience working within regulated environments is highly desirable.

Special Requirements

Must possess a valid North Carolina Driver’s License

Education and Experience

· Graduation from a regionally- or CHEA-accredited college or university with an Associate’s Degree in accounting, business administration, or related field. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Minimum of 3-5 years of accounting experience, preferably within the nonprofit sector. Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in professional accounting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Strong understanding of GAAP standards. Exceptional analytical abilities, high attention to detail, and excellent communication skills. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in various accounting disciplines, including non-profit, and public accounting, coupled with exceptional technical skills in financial software and regulatory frameworks.
