Full Job Description

Surgical Scrub Technician: A PRN—per diem position is available in the Operating Room and within Sterile Processing. The only benefits available are paid sick time, Holiday pay, and 403(b) retirement programs.

Shift incentive of $125 per shift worked

Leadville, Colorado, is a historic Victorian-era mining town and the highest incorporated city in the United States, situated at 10,152 feet—nearly two miles above sea level. St. Vincent General Hospital District—commonly known as St. Vincent Health—has served the Leadville community since the late 1800s, with roots dating back to 1879. Graduated from an accredited program for operating room technicians. Registered as a surgical technician by the Colorado Division of Regulatory Agencies (DORA).
Current BLS certification through AHA.
Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
1-2 years of experience as a scrub or surgical technician preferred.
Demonstrate good organizational skills.
Ability to work independently.
Able to lift to 50 pounds frequently, push and pull up to 75 pounds
Basis to advanced knowledge of the scrub role and responsibilities for most surgical procedures at the hospital.
Communicate professionally with internal and external customers.
Working knowledge of interventional equipment (including C-Arm and ultrasound equipment), procedures, and materials/supplies needed for each procedure.
Knowledge of sterile technique.

Accurately identifies and sets up equipment, instruments, and supplies necessary for each surgical procedure based on assessment of need using appropriate resources. Examples include physician preference cards, departmental standards of care, and ACORN standards.
Sets up and maintains a sterile field in preparation for surgical procedures and during the intraoperative delivery of instruments, equipment, and supplies to surgeons by demonstrating competency in the principles of surgical procedures.
Utilizes universal precautions appropriately. Endures appropriate safety measures taken for the patient, including but not limited to accurate sponge, sharps, and instrument counts; handling of specimens; proper use/handling of implants; use of electrocautery; use of lasers, verification, labeling and handling of medications/ irrigation fluids and reports time and appropriate dosages/amounts of administration to circulator, proper and safe use of all electrical devices and equipment; appropriate positioning of patient, safe moving and transporting of patients, and safe and correct use of surgical instruments and equipment, etc.
Anticipates physician, surgical team, and patient needs throughout the procedure and adapts to changes quickly & effectively, including emergency responses.
Identify and immediately intervene with the use of any malfunctioning equipment, promptly isolate and label equipment, and report it to the appropriate person.
Continuously update physician preference card; assist with and expedite room set up and clean up; assist with patient care activities and other duties as assigned.
Sterilizes supplies and instruments using the prescribed method (e.g., steam, gas plasma (Sterrad).
Operates washer/decontaminator per department policy and procedure.
Understands the basic principles of all sterilization equipment used in the department.
Demonstrates knowledge of how items to be sterilized should be packaged to promote successful sterilization.
