Senior Carpenter & Field Training Manager- Deck Construction
Fence & Deck Connection, Inc. is seeking an accomplished Senior Carpenter & Field Training Manager to join our field operations team.
This is not a classroom training position and not a desk-based management role. We are looking for an expert-level deck carpenter who can build, lead crews, solve complex field problems, and—just as importantly—teach others how to perform the work correctly without doing everything for them.
The right candidate will combine exceptional craftsmanship with strong field leadership and coaching ability. This person will help establish consistent construction standards, develop apprentices and installers into productive Lead Carpenters, and strengthen the overall quality and capability of our deck installation teams.
If you are the person other carpenters turn to when a project gets complicated—and you know how to transfer that knowledge to others—we want to talk with you.
What You'll DoExpert-Level Deck Construction
- Perform hands-on residential deck construction and advanced carpentry work in the field.
- Build and oversee deck projects from layout and framing through decking, stairs, railings, trim, and final completion.
- Read and interpret plans, specifications, measurements, layouts, and project requirements.
- Troubleshoot complex construction conditions and develop practical field solutions.
- Demonstrate proper use of tools, materials, equipment, and installation techniques.
- Step into challenging projects when advanced carpentry expertise or corrective work is required.
- Maintain high standards for craftsmanship, productivity, jobsite organization, safety, and customer experience.
Field Leadership & Crew Development
- Lead employees in the field while remaining actively engaged in construction work.
- Set clear expectations for quality, productivity, safety, professionalism, and jobsite performance.
- Teach employees how to perform the work rather than simply taking over and completing it for them.
- Observe employees performing tasks, identify skill gaps, provide real-time coaching, and verify improvement.
- Hold employees accountable when work does not meet established standards.
- Model professional leadership and effective communication on active jobsites.
- Help employees develop the judgment and problem-solving skills necessary to work more independently.
Apprentice & Carpenter Development
- Train and develop apprentices, helpers, installers, and developing carpenters.
- Help establish clear progression from Apprentice/Helper → Carpenter/Installer → Senior Carpenter → Lead Carpenter.
- Conduct hands-on skills assessments and identify individual training needs.
- Develop employees in core competencies including layout, framing, stairs, decking, railing, finish work, tool use, safety, and jobsite management.
- Identify employees who are ready for greater responsibility and those who require additional coaching or retraining.
- Partner with Operations leadership to develop employees into productive, independent Lead Carpenters.
- Support cross-training initiatives as the Company's field workforce continues to develop.
Construction Standards & Quality
- Reinforce Fence & Deck Connection construction and installation standards across field teams.
- Help ensure crews use consistent construction methods and follow approved plans, specifications, manufacturer requirements, and Company procedures.
- Identify recurring workmanship issues, callbacks, installation errors, and rework trends.
- Determine whether performance issues result from skill gaps, training needs, execution, or failure to follow established standards.
- Provide targeted field coaching and retraining when recurring problems are identified.
- Partner with Operations leadership to improve field quality and reduce preventable rework and callbacks.
Training Program Development
This position will also help strengthen FDC's overall deck-construction training program.
Responsibilities may include:
- Assist in developing and improving hands-on deck training curriculum.
- Establish practical skills assessments and competency standards.
- Document recommended construction methods and field best practices.
- Help create consistent training expectations across locations and crews.
- Provide feedback on the effectiveness of training programs.
- Help identify and develop experienced employees who can serve as future trainers, mentors, and Lead Carpenters.
- Support the continued development of FDC's field training and career-progression programs.
What We're Looking ForRequired

- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex field and construction conditions.
- Strong working knowledge of hand tools, power tools, construction equipment, and jobsite safety.
- Previous experience leading crews, apprentices, installers, or other skilled-trade employees.
- Demonstrated ability to teach, coach, and develop others—not simply perform the work yourself.
- Ability to provide direct, constructive feedback and hold employees accountable to established standards.
- Strong communication, organization, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record for assigned Company driving responsibilities.
- Ability to travel to Company locations and jobsites as required.

- Increased apprentice and carpenter skill progression.
- More employees capable of independently leading deck installations.
- Improved installation quality and first-time-right performance.

- Improved field safety and jobsite practices.
- A stronger pipeline of future Lead Carpenters and field leaders.

Physical & Work Requirements
This is an active, hands-on field construction position. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions associated with residential deck construction, including standing and walking for extended periods; bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing, pushing, pulling, and working on uneven surfaces; safely operating construction tools and equipment; and regularly lifting and handling construction materials.
Work is primarily performed outdoors at active residential construction sites and may involve exposure to changing weather conditions, heat, cold, dust, noise, construction materials, tools, and equipment.
Fence & Deck Connection provides reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities in accordance with applicable law.
Why Fence & Deck Connection?
This is an opportunity for an experienced carpenter to take the next step in their career without giving up the craft.
You will continue building and working in the field, but your experience will have a broader impact. You'll help establish the standards, develop the people, and build the next generation of skilled carpenters who will support Fence & Deck Connection's continued growth.
If you can build at an expert level, lead people effectively, teach the craft, enforce high standards, and take pride in seeing others become successful because of what you taught them, we encourage you to apply.
