Job Title: Emergency Room (ER) Registered Nurse (RN)

Department: Emergency Department

Employment Type: Full-Time / Part-Time / Contract / Travel

Reports To: Emergency Department Nurse Manager

Locations: Urbana, Peoria, Normal IL

Shifts: Days/Nights both available

Job Summary

The Emergency Room (ER) Registered Nurse is responsible for providing high-quality, compassionate, and timely care to patients presenting with acute illnesses, traumatic injuries, and medical emergencies. The ER Nurse rapidly assesses, prioritizes, and stabilizes patients while collaborating with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to deliver optimal patient outcomes in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

Perform rapid patient assessments and triage using established emergency nursing protocols.
Administer medications, IV fluids, blood products, and treatments as prescribed.
Monitor and evaluate patients' vital signs, symptoms, and response to treatment.
Assist physicians during emergency procedures such as intubation, central line insertion, chest tube placement, and trauma resuscitation.
Recognize and respond promptly to life-threatening conditions, including cardiac arrest, stroke, sepsis, respiratory failure, and trauma cases.
Operate and monitor emergency medical equipment, including cardiac monitors, defibrillators, ventilators, and infusion pumps.
Document patient assessments, interventions, medications, and outcomes accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR).
Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions.
Coordinate patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
Maintain infection prevention and patient safety standards.
Participate in Code Blue, trauma activations, STEMI, stroke alerts, and other emergency response situations.
Collaborate effectively with physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, laboratory staff, radiology, and other healthcare professionals.
Provide emotional support and compassionate care to patients and their families during emergency situations.

Required Qualifications

Active Registered Nurse (RN) license of IL
Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
Minimum 1–2 years of Emergency Department experience preferred
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification.
Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) preferred.
Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) preferred.

Required Skills

Strong emergency assessment and critical thinking skills.
Excellent triage and prioritization abilities.
Ability to remain calm under pressure in high-acuity situations.
Knowledge of emergency medications and critical care protocols.
Effective communication and teamwork.
Proficiency in EMR documentation.
Excellent IV insertion and medication administration skills.
Strong patient education and advocacy skills.

Preferred Experience

Experience caring for adult and pediatric emergency patients.
Trauma Level I, II, or III Emergency Department experience.
Experience with STEMI, stroke, sepsis, trauma, psychiatric emergencies, and critical care patients.
Familiarity with Epic, Cerner, Meditech, or other EMR systems.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds.
Ability to respond quickly during emergency situations.
Manual dexterity to operate medical equipment.
Ability to work 12-hour shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call schedules as required.

Work Environment

Fast-paced Emergency Department.
Exposure to infectious diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and hazardous materials.
Frequent interaction with critically ill or injured patients.
High-stress environment requiring rapid decision-making and teamwork.
