Job Summary:
In this role you will be responsible for leading and coordinating daily painting and fabricating operations to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and in accordance with established quality standards. This role supervises the painting and fabricating personnel, assigns work activities, monitors production progress, inspects surface preparation and finished coatings, and ensures the proper use of materials, equipment, and painting processes. The Paint & Accident Repair Shop Supervisor ensures compliance with company policies, safety procedures, and quality requirements while promoting a productive and organized work environment. This position works closely with management, project teams, and employees to resolve operational issues, improve workflow, and deliver high-quality workmanship across assigned projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise and coordinate the daily operations of the body repair, fabrication, and paint departments to ensure repairs are completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
- Assign, prioritize, and monitor work activities for painters, fabricators, and support personnel to meet production schedules and quality standards.
- Inspect vehicle preparation, masking, priming, painting, and finishing to ensure compliance with customer specifications and company quality requirements.
- Verify proper surface preparation, coating application, color matching, and finish quality for new, refurbished, and repaired vehicles.
- Ensure the safe handling, mixing, storage, and disposal of paints, coatings, solvents, and hazardous materials in accordance with environmental and safety regulations.
- Monitor inventory levels of paints, coatings, supplies, and equipment, and coordinate material requests to support production needs.
- Ensure body repair equipment, welding and fabrication tools, spray booths, compressors, and related equipment are properly maintained and operating efficiently.
- Enforce compliance with company policies, OSHA regulations, environmental requirements, and all applicable safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Coordinate with personnel teams to resolve issues, minimize downtime, and maintain workflow.
- Train, coach, and evaluate painting and fabrication personnel on proper techniques, safety practices, equipment operation, and quality expectations.
- Monitor productivity, identify process improvement opportunities, and implement corrective actions to enhance efficiency and reduce rework.
- Maintain accurate production, quality, material usage, and safety records, and provide regular status updates to management.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and foster a culture of safety, teamwork, accountability, and high-quality workmanship.
Required Qualifications:
Education:
- High school diploma or GED required; technical, vocational, or trade school training in automotive, industrial, or commercial painting is preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in automotive, heavy-duty truck, industrial, or commercial vehicle painting, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role.
Skills and Abilities:
- Experience supervising or performing accident repairs, including bodywork, metal fabrication, welding, and automotive refinishing; experience with heavy-duty trucks, commercial vehicles, or vocational equipment is strongly preferred.
- Thorough knowledge of structural and non-structural body repairs, panel replacement, metal fabrication, welding, surface preparation, masking, priming, paint application techniques, color matching, and finishing processes.
- Experience using body repair equipment, welding and fabrication tools, spray equipment, paint booths, mixing systems, frame measuring equipment, and other automotive repair tools.
- Working knowledge of automotive repair procedures, structural repair methods, and refinishing systems, including epoxy primers, urethane topcoats, clear coats, and other specialty coatings.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety requirements, hazardous material handling, personal protective equipment (PPE), environmental compliance, and safe work practices applicable to body repair, fabrication, and paint operations.
- Proven ability to lead, train, coach, and motivate body technicians, fabricators, painters, and apprentices while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, productivity, and customer satisfaction.
- Strong organizational, communication, leadership, problem-solving, and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple repair priorities.
- Ability to read and interpret repair estimates, work orders, manufacturer repair procedures, technical specifications, and production schedules.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and repair management, estimating, production tracking, or inventory management systems is preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed primarily inside a warehouse, fabrication shop, and paint booth environment.
- Regular exposure to paint coatings, solvents, chemical vapors, welding fumes, metal dust, grinding debris, overspray, noise, and industrial equipment; required PPE, including respirators, welding protection, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, and protective clothing, must be worn as required.
- Must comply with paint booth safety procedures, fabrication shop safety practices, ventilation requirements, hazardous material handling practices, lockout/tagout procedures, and applicable environmental regulations.
- Work involves standing for extended periods, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, climbing, kneeling, and maneuvering around large vehicles such as refuse trucks, concrete mixer trucks, and heavy fabrication components.
- Requires operation and supervision of spray-painting equipment, paint mixing systems, paint booth controls, ventilation systems, welding equipment, cutting tools, grinders, fabrication machinery, cranes, forklifts, and other related shop equipment.
- Must maintain awareness of fire prevention procedures and the safe handling of flammable paints, coatings, solvents, compressed gases, and hot work associated with welding and fabrication activities.
- Requires attention to detail and visual inspection of fabricated components and painted surfaces for dimensional accuracy, weld quality, coverage, finish quality, defects, and color consistency.
- Work schedule may require overtime, extended hours, or schedule flexibility to support production requirements, fabrication schedules, and project deadlines.
- Must maintain a clean, organized, and safe fabrication shop and paint booth environment in accordance with company standards, OSHA requirements, and regulatory guidelines.
- Frequent coordination between fabrication and paint operations is required to ensure components are properly prepared, repaired, finished, and meet quality and production standards.
