Flaherty’s Financial Services, LLC is seeking an accomplished accounting professional who is ready for greater autonomy, meaningful client relationships, and a clear opportunity for career advancement.
This position is designed for an experienced mid-level or senior accountant who can independently manage a portfolio of business and nonprofit clients while serving as a trusted financial advisor. You will work directly with business owners, nonprofit leaders, and firm leadership—providing financial insight, strengthening accounting processes, and helping clients make informed business decisions.
This is not a traditional bookkeeping role.
You will take ownership of client engagements, review financial activity, identify issues and opportunities, guide clients through accounting and compliance matters, and contribute to the continued growth of our firm.

About the Role
As our Senior Accountant | Client Advisory Manager, you will serve as a primary accounting advisor for a diverse portfolio of businesses, nonprofit organizations, and individual clients throughout Maine.
You will oversee ongoing accounting operations, maintain and review financial information, support tax and compliance needs, and provide proactive recommendations that help clients improve their financial processes and make informed decisions.
The successful candidate will be comfortable managing multiple client engagements, communicating directly with clients, exercising professional judgment, and taking ownership of deadlines and deliverables.
This position offers significant autonomy while providing the support of an experienced leadership team. You will work with a wide variety of clients, making every day different while continuing to expand your knowledge, advisory skills, and professional expertise.
This is a full-time, in-office position located in Scarborough, Maine, working approximately 40 hours per week.
Primary Responsibilities
- Independently manage ongoing accounting relationships for an assigned client portfolio
- Serve as a professional, responsive, and trusted point of contact for clients
- Maintain and review accurate financial records using QuickBooks Online, payroll platforms, and Microsoft Excel
- Review client accounting activity for accuracy, completeness, and proper classification
- Perform monthly bank, credit card, loan, and balance sheet reconciliations
- Manage accounts receivable and accounts payable processes
- Process payroll and prepare related payroll tax filings
- Prepare Forms 1099 and W-2
- Prepare and review sales tax and payroll tax returns
- Generate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Review and interpret financial statements and explain results clearly to clients
- Identify accounting inconsistencies, financial concerns, and process improvement opportunities
- Provide proactive recommendations to improve client accounting systems, financial controls, and operational efficiency
- Assist clients with audits, grant reporting, and compliance requirements
- Support tax preparation and year-end accounting projects
- Communicate effectively with clients, vendors, government agencies, and internal team members
- Maintain organized client records and supporting documentation
- Help strengthen internal procedures and service delivery
- Assist with mentoring or reviewing the work of accounting team members as the position develops
Required Qualifications
Candidates should have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field, or at least five years of progressive accounting experience.
Qualified applicants should also have:
- At least five years of hands-on accounting experience
- Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks Online
- Experience managing accounting responsibilities for multiple clients, organizations, or business entities
- Strong understanding of bank and balance sheet reconciliations
- Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and financial reporting
- Strong Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office skills
- Ability to read, interpret, and explain financial statements
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
- Ability to independently manage multiple priorities and deadlines
- Professional judgment and a strong commitment to client service
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a team
Preferred Qualifications
The following experience is highly valued but not required:
- CPA designation or active CPA candidacy
- Public accounting or outsourced accounting experience
- Experience preparing or reviewing business or individual tax returns
- Nonprofit accounting experience
- Grant reporting or audit preparation experience
- Experience supervising, reviewing, or mentoring accounting staff
- Experience advising clients on accounting processes, systems, internal controls, or operational improvements
