Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Excavation Foreman is responsible for leading field crews and overseeing daily construction activities on earthwork, utility, and sitework projects. This position ensures projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and according to plans and specifications. The Foreman serves as the primary field leader, coordinating manpower, equipment, subcontractors, and materials while maintaining Topland Construction's standards for quality, productivity, and professionalism.

Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesProject Leadership

Direct and supervise field crews on commercial earthwork, sitework, and underground utility projects.
Review plans, specifications, and project schedules with project management.
Coordinate daily work activities and assign tasks to crew members.
Monitor project progress and adjust operations to meet production goals.
Communicate effectively with Superintendents, Project Managers, inspectors, subcontractors, and customers.

Earthwork Operations

Oversee excavation, grading, cut/fill balancing, site preparation, and compaction activities.
Ensure grades, elevations, and slopes meet project specifications.
Coordinate mass earthmoving operations and material management.
Verify work is performed according to survey stakes, GPS models, and construction plans.

Underground Utilities

Supervise installation of storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water main, drainage systems, structures, and related utility infrastructure.
Ensure trench safety, utility installation standards, and testing requirements are met.
Coordinate utility crews, pipe installation, backfill operations, and inspections.

Equipment & Resource Management

Schedule and coordinate labor, equipment, trucking, and materials.
Monitor equipment utilization and report maintenance needs.
Ensure proper operation and care of company equipment and tools.
Minimize downtime and maximize crew productivity.

Safety & Compliance

Lead daily safety meetings and jobsite hazard assessments.
Enforce company safety policies and OSHA requirements.
Maintain a safe, organized, and professional jobsite.
Ensure trenching, excavation, and utility work complies with all safety regulations.
Immediately address unsafe conditions or behaviors.

Quality Control

Inspect work for compliance with project plans and specifications.
Maintain high-quality workmanship standards.
Identify and resolve field issues before they impact production or project schedules.
Coordinate inspections and testing as required.

Documentation

Complete daily reports, production tracking, and equipment logs.
Document quantities installed, weather conditions, manpower, and project progress.
Report project issues, delays, and change conditions to management.

QualificationsRequired

5+ years of experience in excavation, earthwork, sitework, or underground utility construction.
2+ years of leadership or foreman experience.
Strong understanding of grading, excavation, and utility installation practices.
Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and grade stakes.
Knowledge of excavation safety and trench protection requirements.
Valid driver's license with clean driving record.
Strong communication and leadership skills.

Preferred

Experience with GPS machine control and grade control systems.
OSHA 30 certification.
CDL license.
Experience on commercial and municipal construction projects.
Knowledge of storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water main, and site development construction.

Physical Requirements

Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and lift up to 50 pounds.
Ability to safely navigate active construction sites.
Ability to work extended hours when project schedules require.
