Full Job Description

Twin Cities manufacturer looking for a self-directed Senior Accountant to support the Controller across the full accounting and close process, sharpen how we work, and grow into broader ownership over time. The Controller leads the close --this role executes alongside them, brings ideas, and earns expanded responsibility as trust and capability are demonstrated.

This is a genuine opportunity to shape a finance function, not just fill a seat in one. You will have visibility into the full P&L and be expected to have opinions about how things should work. As the company grows, so does this role -- with a clear path toward expanded ownership and, for the right person, future leadership or management responsibility.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Accounting & Month-End Close

Support the Controller in executing the full month-end close cycle: prepare and post journal entries, book accruals and prepaid amortization, and ensure the accuracy and timeliness of financial statements.
Perform monthly bank reconciliations and maintain the fixed asset subledger including additions, disposals, and depreciation schedules.
Maintain compliance with GAAP; research and apply technical guidance as business needs evolve.
Support internal controls documentation and identify control gaps as the company scales; flag risks proactively to the Controller.
Assist with management reporting packages and support for year-end audit and tax filings.

Sales & Use Tax

Own the end-to-end sales and use tax process: monthly/quarterly filings, nexus tracking, exemption certificate management, and audit support. Prior experience preferred; the right candidate with a strong compliance mindset can develop into this area.
Monitor regulatory changes and ensure the company remains compliant across applicable jurisdictions.
Partner with operations and sales to ensure accurate tax treatment on transactions.

Process Improvement & Documentation

Assess current accounting workflows end-to-end; identify inefficiencies, control gaps, and scalability risks.
Design and implement repeatable, documented processes that reduce manual effort and increase accuracy.
Serve as a thought partner to the Controller -- bring solutions alongside problems, not just issue logs.
Champion a continuous improvement mindset across the finance function.

Systems Proficiency & Data Management

Extract, validate, and manipulate data from the accounting system (Business Central preferred) to support close, reporting, and analysis needs.
Build and maintain queries or reports that give the team timely visibility into financial data.
Partner on ERP enhancements and integrations as the company scales.

Monthly Financials & FP&A Support

Run the monthly financial reporting package: prepare, review, and distribute financial statements with period-over-period commentary for management review.
Support the Director of FP&A with variance analyses, forecasting cycles, and ad hoc financial modeling in Excel or planning tools (e.g., Blue Ops).
Partner with the Controller on special projects, cash flow analysis, and KPI development.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

3-6 years of progressive accounting experience; solid GAAP foundation with month-end close as a core part of your background.
Proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, XLOOKUP, dynamic arrays, basic financial modeling).
Hands-on experience with an ERP or accounting system; comfortable extracting and working with financial data.
Strong communicator -- able to translate financial results and process recommendations for non-finance stakeholders.

Preferred / Nice to Have

Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
Exposure to FP&A tools (Blue Ops, Planful, Vena, or similar).
CPA license or active CPA candidate.
Sales and use tax experience (filings, nexus, exemption certificates); strong compliance aptitude considered in lieu of direct experience.
Experience supporting an external audit or working with auditors.
Background in manufacturing, distribution, or industrial services.
Supervisory experience (helpful as the business scales).
Comfort using AI tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, Claude, ChatGPT) to automate accounting tasks such as reconciliation drafts, variance narratives, and report generation. We view this as a multiplier, not a requirement.

Pay: $110,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year
