Full Job Description

Job type: Full-time, hourly/nonexempt, on-site
Shift: 1st Shift - 6:00-4:30 pm M-F with occasional Saturdays (half day)
Pay: Based on demonstrated experience
Overtime: Available and required when production needs dictate
Reports to: Production Lead

Position summary

Phoenix Steel Fabricating is seeking an experienced CNC Laser Operator who can independently set up, operate, inspect and troubleshoot CNC laser-cutting equipment.

This is not an entry-level load-and-unload position. The successful candidate will have hands-on experience operating TRUMPF or AMADA laser equipment, reading blueprints, completing machine setups, adjusting cutting conditions and verifying finished parts with precision measuring tools.

You will be responsible for producing quality parts to customer specifications while maintaining safe operations, protecting equipment from damage, meeting production schedules and supporting continuous improvement.

Required qualifications

At least two years of hands-on CNC laser-cutting experience, including machine setup and operation.
Experience operating and setting up TRUMPF or AMADA laser equipment.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, dimensions, tolerances and production instructions.
Ability to inspect parts using calipers, micrometers and height gauges.
Ability to recognize laser-cutting defects, including poor edge quality, scratches, surface nonconformities and dimensional problems.
Ability to perform nozzle changes, nozzle centering, routine cleaning and basic preventive maintenance.
Ability to use machine controls and computer functions required to set up, operate and adjust the laser-cutting process.
Ability to troubleshoot alarms or operating errors and appropriately use technical support when needed.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Dependable attendance and the ability to work overtime when required.

Preferred qualifications

Experience with both TRUMPF and AMADA equipment.
Experience creating or modifying laser programs.
Experience adjusting piercing and cutting conditions for different materials and gauges.
Experience with automated material-handling systems or unattended laser operation.
Experience recognizing slug-drop and part-tip-up risks before they cause a collision or equipment damage.
Experience training material handlers or less-experienced laser operators.
Demonstrated leadership, troubleshooting and continuous-improvement skills.

Key responsibilities

Safely set up and operate CNC laser-cutting equipment according to the production schedule, work order and customer specifications.
Review blueprints, material requirements and job instructions before beginning production.
Confirm that the correct material, thickness, program and order requirements are being used.
Perform basic and more difficult setups, including setups involving low-carbon steel, moderate-gauge material and applicable multi-set laser functions.
Adjust piercing and cutting conditions to maintain part quality and efficient production.
Monitor cutting operations for slug drop-out, part tip-up, head-collision risks and other conditions that could damage the laser.
Recommend or make appropriate program and process changes when cutting conditions require adjustment.
Remove completed parts from sheets and inspect them for dimensional accuracy, edge quality, scratches and other defects.
Measure parts accurately with calipers, micrometers and height gauges to confirm conformance to print specifications.
Identify suspect material or parts and apply the required nonconformance identification.
Monitor the calibration status of inspection equipment used in the department.
Troubleshoot and clear machine errors within the operator’s level of responsibility.
Perform basic laser maintenance, including nozzle changes, nozzle centering and scheduled routine cleaning.
Complete production tags and documentation accurately, including material and part identification.
Communicate setup, programming, quality and equipment concerns promptly to the team and Production Lead.
Meet or exceed established safety, quality, efficiency and cycle-time expectations.
Support the company’s goal of reducing process variation and achieving zero defects.
Participate in continuous-improvement efforts.
Assist with training material handlers and developing laser operators when qualified to do so.
Maintain a safe, clean and orderly work area and wear all required personal protective equipment.

Physical requirements and work environment

Regularly stand, walk, bend, twist, reach and use hands to handle materials, parts and controls.
Frequently push, pull, squat and reach during the shift.
Lift and move up to 50 pounds regularly and occasionally lift or move up to 75 pounds.
Possess the close vision and color vision necessary to inspect parts and identify defects.
Work around moving mechanical equipment in a manufacturing environment with a generally moderate noise level.
Wear steel-toed footwear and safety glasses in manufacturing areas.
