The Police Officer performs a variety of essential law enforcement duties to support patrol operations, criminal investigations, traffic enforcement, crime prevention, school safety, and community relations. This role is responsible for enforcing local, state, and federal laws; responding to emergencies and service calls; maintaining public order and safety; and fostering positive community engagement.
Officers are expected to carry out their duties in accordance with departmental policies, procedures, and legal guidelines, exercising sound judgment and professionalism in all situations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Serves as an ambassador for the Town of Timnath, representing the department with professionalism and integrity in all interactions.
- Patrols assigned areas to deter and detect criminal activity, enforce laws and ordinances, and ensure public safety.
- Responds promptly to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, including crimes in progress, accidents, disturbances, and other incidents.
- Conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations, including collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses and suspects, and preparing detailed reports.
- Enforces traffic laws, investigates motor vehicle crashes, and issues citations or warnings, as appropriate.
- Prepares accurate, thorough, and timely reports related to incidents, arrests, investigations, and enforcement activities.
- Works collaboratively with other officers, supervisors, and partner agencies to ensure coordinated response to incidents and effective service delivery.
- Attends court proceedings and provides testimony as required in criminal and civil cases.
- Maintains equipment, vehicles, and assigned gear in a clean, functional, and service-ready condition.
- Upholds departmental policies, procedures, and operational standards while performing duties in compliance with federal, state, county, and municipal laws.
- Engages in proactive community policing, building trust and positive relationships with residents, businesses, and organizations.
- Participates in crime prevention programs, school safety initiatives, and other outreach efforts to enhance public safety and community involvement.
- Demonstrates a commitment to ongoing training and professional development, including participation in required certifications, in-service programs, and department initiatives.
- Supports the department’s mission by maintaining physical and mental readiness, participating in wellness programs, and fostering a positive, team-oriented work environment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to support the goals and operations of the police department.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Working knowledge of modern policing principles, patrol operations, and law enforcement best practices.
- Familiarity with federal, state, and local laws, including relevant legal procedures, municipal codes, and constitutional guidelines applicable to police work.
- Proficient in police procedures, including arrest protocols, report writing, and evidence handling.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess situations quickly and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities effectively, demonstrating organization and time management in dynamic and sometimes high-stress environment.
- Skilled in the safe and responsible operation of department-issued vehicles and equipment.
- Maintains discretion and professionalism when handling sensitive or confidential information.
- Capable of exercising sound judgment and initiative during routine patrol and emergency situations.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for interactions with the public, colleagues, and partner agencies.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with the department and community, including individuals from diverse backgrounds.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education
- High School Diploma or GED; college coursework or degree preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years as a P.O.S.T. certified officer serving in a patrol capacity, having satisfactorily completed a formal training program.
- Certifications and/or Licensures: Colorado P.O.S.T. certification, currently enrolled in a Colorado P.O.S.T. approved academy, or out-of-state Police Officer that is fully certified in another state and have served a minimum of one year within the last three years (will qualify for a provisional Colorado POST certificate).
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be twenty-one (21) years old.
- Be a United States citizen at the time of application.
- Must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check, physical exam, polygraph, and psychological exam prior to commencing employment.
- You must meet the current hiring standards listed below:
- Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification or other state equivalent.
- Currently employed full-time as a police officer by a state, county, or municipal agency.
- Applicants who are retired or separated must apply within 20 months of separation, must have been in good standing at the time of retirement or separation and must possess a current P.O.S.T. certification or other state equivalent.
- To be qualified for lateral entry as a Police Officer, applicants must possess a minimum of three (3) years of police officer experience while employed full-time by a state, county, or municipal agency. Academy training does not count toward the three-year minimum experience requirement. Experience accumulated as a deputy or officer employed at a correctional facility, District Attorney’s Office, or as a Federal or Military Police Officer is not applicable experience.
- Valid Colorado’s driver’s license; ability to attain within 30 days of employment.
- Currently possess a Basic Certificate issued by the Colorado State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.), or equivalent. External candidates must obtain Colorado P.O.S.T. within 6 months of hire.
- Please note: Out of state candidates must obtain a Provisional Certification | Colorado POST before the first day of employment and must successfully challenge Colorado POST within 6 months of obtaining a Colorado Provisional POST Certification letter. TPD will support candidates challenging Colorado POST.
Must have NO:
- Felony convictions
- Any conviction, no contest, or deferred judgment or deferred sentence of a felony crime.
- Any misdemeanor crime conviction with the past 3 years.
- Certain misdemeanor crimes, as defined by Colorado P.O.S.T., which would affect a peace officer certification in Colorado. Disqualifying Incidents | Colorado POST
- Domestic Violence convictions
- Any illicit drug use within the past 3 years (includes LSD, heroin, cocaine, PCP, mushrooms/psilocybin, amphetamines, inhalants, steroids, etc.)
- Use of any illegal drug, on or off duty, while employed as a law enforcement officer.
- Refusal to agree to submit to a drug screening as an applicant.
- Any use of physical force against another person resulting in physical harm, requiring medical attention except as authorized by law within the last three years.
- More than one sustained complaint or any suspension for excessive force within the last three years.
- Intentional omission or falsification of any question contained in the Town of Timnath employment application process.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical and environmental demands described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of the Police Officer position.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, balance, reach, grasp, speak, hear, and see with sufficient clarity to perform essential duties.
- Occasionally required to run, push, pull, twist, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, and physically restrain combative individuals.
- Must frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
- Must maintain physical and mental stamina to respond effectively during extended shifts, emergencies, or physically demanding situations.
- Required to wear a duty belt and gear weighing approximately 15-20 pounds for 10–12-hour shifts.
- Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
- Must be able to read, write, and communicate clearly in English.
- Duties are performed in various environments, including office settings, patrol vehicles, and outdoor locations, often in inclement or extreme temperatures.
- Exposure to loud noises, hazardous materials, fumes, airborne particles, vibrations, and potentially dangerous or unpredictable situations is common.
- This role involves a high degree of risk due to interactions with potentially violent individuals, emotionally distressed persons, and hazardous conditions, including traffic-related dangers.
- This position involves frequent exposure to high-stress and potentially life-threatening situations requiring calm and decisive action.
- Shift work is required, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as operational needs demand.
