Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Job Costing Manager is responsible for developing accurate, competitive, and profitable project estimates for residential remodeling projects. This role oversees the company's costing systems, pricing strategies, labor and material databases, and estimating processes to ensure every proposal reflects current market conditions while meeting profitability goals.

Working closely with Sales, Design, Purchasing, Production, and Finance, the Job Costing Manager analyzes project costs, monitors job performance, and continuously improves estimating accuracy through data analysis and process refinement.

Key Responsibilities

Cost Estimating & Pricing

Develop detailed cost estimates for kitchen, bathroom, basement, additions, whole-home renovations, and other residential remodeling projects.
Build comprehensive labor, material, subcontractor, equipment, permit, and overhead budgets.
Review plans, specifications, and scopes of work to ensure accurate pricing.
Collaborate with designers and sales consultants to develop competitive project proposals.
Maintain standard pricing models and estimating templates.

Cost Management

Maintain and update labor rates, production standards, and material pricing.
Monitor supplier and subcontractor pricing and negotiate cost improvements when appropriate.
Track market trends that affect project costs.
Develop and maintain standardized cost databases for all remodeling services.

Job Cost Analysis

Compare estimated costs to actual project costs.
Identify cost variances and recommend corrective actions.
Prepare profitability reports for completed projects.
Analyze labor productivity, material waste, and subcontractor performance.
Work with production teams to improve estimating accuracy and operational efficiency.

Process Improvement

Develop standardized estimating procedures and best practices.
Improve estimating software, workflows, and documentation.
Create reporting dashboards to monitor estimating performance and project profitability.
Support implementation of new technologies that improve cost accuracy and operational efficiency.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Partner with Sales to ensure proposals are both competitive and profitable.
Work with Purchasing to maintain accurate vendor pricing.
Support Production with budget tracking and change order pricing.
Collaborate with Finance on forecasting, budgeting, and financial reporting.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Business, Finance, Accounting, or related field preferred.
5+ years of estimating, costing, or construction management experience.
Experience in residential remodeling, renovation, or custom home construction preferred.
Strong understanding of residential construction methods, materials, and labor requirements.
Proficiency with estimating software and Microsoft Excel.
Experience with project management and accounting software is a plus.
