ROCKFORD AMBULATORY SURGERY CENTER

JOB DESCRIPTION: RN 1st Shift, Monday-Friday, No Weekends or Holidays

POSITION TITLE: REGISTERED NURSE CCIRCULATOR

DEPARTMENTS: Operating Room

REPORTS TO: Director of PERIOPERATIVE SERVICES

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for assessing and maintaining adequate ventilation, hemostasis and circulation, assessing level of consciousness, providing pain management, and ensuring the safety of the patient until discharge from the facility. Apply knowledge of the nursing process, illness, surgical procedures and anesthesia practice to the post-surgical nursing process. This responsibility includes communication with all staff members, management, physicians, anesthesia care providers, and the patient. Assess the patient and document the post-surgical assessment process according to AORN Standards and Recommended Practices. Provide quality nursing care and other nursing services to patients and their families / significant others during the postoperative phase.

POSITION EDUCATION / QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.

Current CPR required. ACLS required within the first year - cost covered by facility

Must have OR experience.

Demonstrate the ability to assess and re-evaluate patient’s health status, continuously refining plan of care.

Must possess the ability to uphold a helpful and positive regard for the patient and family.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Provide individualized quality care to each patient, ensuring all patients’ safety and comfort.
Maintain area in a state of readiness at all times, ensuring that all necessary equipment is available and functioning properly, with age specific supplies ready for uses as needed.
Implement physician / anesthesia orders, and continually assess patient.
Use all available resources of patient assessment information to ensure accurate data for nursing process.
Collaborate with Anesthesia department and consult when required.
Document and update assessments, nursing interventions, and patient responses to medical and nursing care.
Complete necessary teaching of patient and family.
Demonstrate an awareness of patients’ rights and concerns, as well as a willingness to address them.
Assume the role of patient advocate and interact as needed with medical staff and peers to benefit patient care.
Demonstrate ability to perform appropriately and in a professional manner during crisis and emergency situations.
Takes responsibility for professional competence and skills.
Complies with all facility policies, procedures, philosophy, and goals. Follows the appropriate chain of command when issues need to be addressed.
Demonstrate flexibility to meet the demands of varying situations, and assist in other area of RASC as needed. Support teamwork within departments and between departments.
Ensure that in every interaction, each person is treated with respect and courtesy, and that all communications are handled appropriately.
Knowledge of basic computer skills to obtain needed information relating to patient care.
Participate in maintaining a clean, well-stocked working environment, and assist other staff members in implementing cost containment measures.
Participate in Department functions including, but not limited to, quality assurance and improvement projects, precepting new staff members, education to improve self and others, attending staff meetings and educational inservices as required.
Maintain confidentiality of position acquired information.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Works in a well lit, well ventilated, temperature controlled environment. Possible daily exposure to medical waste, anesthetic gases, body fluids and blood borne pathogens.

Physical capability to safely execute all duties and responsibilities of the position, including but not limited to, the following:

Assist with supporting, transferring and positioning of patients weighing up to 350 pounds, having the ability to push and maneuver patient-occupied wheelchairs and carts, assisting with surgical preps, and able to support and lift extremities of such patients
Lifting and transporting of large bags, boxes and cartons of supplies, fluids and linen
Ability to push, maneuver and position equipment, including but not limited to, video towers, radiology equipment (large and mini C-Arms), patient carts, OR tables, microscope, instrument trays, anesthesia machines, and other equipment used in the perioperative setting.
Completing technical tasks requiring fine motor skills and precision of movements, including but not limited to, cleaning and/or assembly of instrumentation, medication preparation and/or administration, assisting with procedures and legibility of handwriting.
